Hey gang , when I recently posted that there was water and oil mixture inside my engine, I pulled the plug on oil pan and got a bath of solid water with foamed oil on top. I would say that it was a couple of gallons or so of just water. I broke down the engine, pulled the water pump and then the head. The gasket looks good and doesent look like it was leaking. What to look for? Then pulled oil pan and everything looks normal and motor spins quit easily by hand. I expected to find a big piece of motor laying in the sump but found none. any ideas????? ..... ..... ..... Thanks in Advance ..... .Joe I can"t figure out where the water is coming from?

looked at the haed and sure enough there are small cracks between the cylinders but when checking out the bottom of the block I also say one small crack but could not locate O-rings. If they are needed how are they replaced? Any more ideas?..... ..... .Joe

Joe.. I am confused... you said you looked at the "head" and found cracks between the cylinders.... or is it cracks in the top of the block between the cylinders??? Cracks at the top of the block between the cylinders is not as serious as at the bottom and it can often be used without repair since the head gasket usually does a good job of sealing.. leaking cracks or seals at the bottom will need attention... cracks in the head, probably means replacing it.... joe...the o-rings are on the sleeves inside the water jacket. you can't see them, you have to remove the sleeves to get to them. but it sounds like you've found your leaks. sorry to hear your block is cracked.

I 'pray" am wrong, but with the head off and the oil pan off, take a clean rag and wipe the top of the block real well in the small walls between the cylinders. -Look very carefully for tiny cracks (hope you do NOT find any). Also lay underneath and do the same on bottom of the cylinder holes. If any cracks, the block needs fixed or replaced.
HOWEVER, I am not a to30 guy, but the to35's have sleeves that create the cylinders and they are replaceable--they use a rubber O-ring to seal out radiator fluid from leaking down into oil pan. I was lucky and one went bad and was a fairly easy fix. I do not know in the 30's use sleeves, if so, I hope this is your problem. Mark

yes...the TO-30 Z129 Continental engine has wet sleeves. do the "crack check" like mark said, in the top and bottom block webs that are between the cylinders. you will possibly have to look very closely to see them whe the block is cold. if you don't find any (consider yourself very lucky if you don't) it is possible that the o-rings on the wet sleeves aren't sealing, or you might have a cracked head whick you might have to take to an auto machine shop to get diagnosed.

like mark said...i'll keep my fingers crossed for you htat it's not the dreaded 'cracked block syndrome.
