I've got a pair of Fergies that I want to paint, they aren't trailer queens but working tractors in need of some fresh paint. I've got the equipment, sprayer and 5 hp compressor. I have never painted a tractor except with the old rattle can method. How many coats of primer, same for paint. Do you use a thinner, lacquer or enamel. Battleship gray of course, if that works well, maybe I'll paint the other 4 next year.

One recommendation I"d have is to not put a lot of hardener in the paint for the sheet metal. If the paint gets too brittle, it"ll flake when the sheet metal bends (which it will in just normal use).

Here is the formula I used: White: 168.2 Carbon Black: 266.0 Ochre: 277.7 Red Oxide: 287.5 Blue: 293.4 Acrylic Binder: 942.9

This is for a Ful-Cryl Acrylic from Carquest. One shot of this formulae and you don"t need clearcoat.

I'm using three coats of primer. I start with a real light coat and then build it up.

Ff... there about as many answers to your questions as there are people that paint their own tractors.. I would suggest that you spend some time reading the archives of the "paint and bodywork" forum... you will find all versions of painting from the rattle can to the extreme ureathane... The regulars on that forum will give lots of advice, leaning torwards the mid to high end, but the discussions about the different kinds of paint and your choices is lengthy and priceless.... Preparation and cleanliness are the key to a good paint job and if you spend a lot of time prepping it, it seems pennywise and pound foolish to put a cheap paint back on... Alkyd enamal is the cheapest... modified or synthetic (acrylic) enamals next on up to the Ureathanes... Lacquers are not used much anymore and are not particularly good paints anyway... YOu will want to pay close attention to the discussion on hardeners as the use of such may expose you to "isos" which are aggravating to the respiratory system, could cause things like asthma or hyper sensativity to such chemicals.. I am sure that there many that will jump in with their experiences.. I just wanted to make you aware of other good resources and a few issues.. JIm
