TO-20 Main Bearings

I just bought a brand new crankshaft for my TO-20 and I was surprised how it looks so much like the old ones with stamps and all. Anyway my question is about the main bearings, on the box it says Z129 which is for a TO-30 can these bearings be used on the TO-20 or do I have to get a different set all the parts dealers I have looked at online seem to say that TO-20 and 30 bearings are the same.

Clint, TO-30 bearing shells work just fine on a TO-20, the only differences being an extra drilled port or two that the TO-30 needs for the difference in oil journals in the Z129 block. It will have no impact on your TO-20. A lot of places only carry TO-30 bearing shells to reduce their parts inventory. The only thing to watch for is the front shells, some have a flange, some don't. The flange rides against the crank. If you got the flangeless type, that will work fine, but you need a bushing in it's place. I think the bushing is probably brass/bronze, hopefully it comes with the shells. The bushing was used in the TO-30, the flanged shells in the TO-20. Either will work in your TO-20. You manual covers installation either way. I know you dropped some $$$ on a new crank & bearing shells! Hopefully your rebuild is all downhill from here!

Yes it was an expensive part but at least I can hopefully count on the tractor lasting the rest of my life and then some. As far as the bearing being flanged I am not yet sure but I do know that it had tow thrust washers in the box.

George, what you are calling a "bushing", is that the thrust washer that normally goes on the TO-30 but can be fitted to the TO-20 if you do not have the flanged #1 bearing shell?
