Does anyone have a definite answer as to which way the thermostat on a TO-30 should face? I have heard it discussed and have heard several conflicting answers. I have been told when in doubt put it in hot water and see which way it opens, then install it so it opens away from the motor. The reasoning is the pressure would not allow it to open back against the flow (toward the motor). However, an experienced mechanic (on cars) told me the other day that the spring always goes toward the motor, and that there is not enough pressure to stop it from opening that way. Do any of you long time ferguson guys know the real answer? Thanks in advance for any response. VA.

Just installed one, and it works fine. Bill is correct. The pointed end goes toward the radiator and the spring side faces the engine. For sure.

Bill is right. If ever in doubt, the wax filled bulb( and the spring) has to be on the heat source side. There is pressure in the whole cooling system (both sides of the stat) and the slight "flow" that a centrificul water pump can generate posses no problem for the stat to open against.

Hi VA The spring side faces the engine. The spring side should have a copper plug with the numbers 160 stamped on it.My thermostat had the letters "TO RAD" stamped on the edge that faces the radiator.
I just sent you a pic of my thermostat.hope this cures the conflict:)
