will not run without choke

I have a To30 that my Grandmother gave me. I have rebuilt the carb, replaced the points, condersor, cap and coil but when I start it, it will only run with the choke on. When I let off the choke it will sputter and die. When it starts to sputter I can pull on the choke and it will stay running. I am new to rebuilding tractors so I am looking for any help that I can get. What is the easiest (but proper) way of setting the points? I think that this might be the problem but then again what do I know.

Bent push rod? When it does run, does it back fire into the carb?

No it does not. When it does run with the choke it runs very smooth. I am waiting for a new float to put in.

sounds to me like the "float" is not adjusted correctly.

My TE 20 did this one time. Turned out that it was bad fuel. Had water in it.
I found it pays to buy the good stuff, like a good grade of 89 octane. Amish engine guy told me not to put regular gas (i.e., 87 octane) in my small engines.
Just my two cents.
Let us know how it gets solved.

The sediment bowl and the elbow with the other filter was all changed when I rebuilt the carb. I can try different gas but I when I had the carb apart this morning I noticed that it cracked on the flange that mounts it to the manifold. This could also be the problem. I don't think that it is getting the seal that it needs to limit the air flow. After doing all the things that has been mentioned it is running alot smother with the choke on than it was before. Does this engine require a lead additive? Thanks for all the help. I will keep you all posted on my progress.

Now you may be on to something when you found the crack. As I mentioned in my earlier post, an air leak could very well be the problem. NO, you do NOT need lead additive, in my opinion, and I think most people on this site will agree with that.

Thank you. I was worried about having to put lead in the gas. I think I have more money to put in this than I thought. Will keep you posted.

Check the fuel flow through the carburettor, take out the drain plug and allow the fuel to run into a container, leave it running for a quite a while and see if it stops, that will confirm that it is a fuel problem. If is is then you have to check all the way back to the tank, did you clean out the filter in the small elbow that screws into the carburettor, you may not know it is there. Check that all the filters are fitted in the fuel tap and the one on top of the tap in the Fuel Tank itself. look in the tank and see if there is any rust in there floating around that will find its way to the carb.

I'd clean the fuel system for starters.

Not sure exactly your question, but you set the points with feeler gauge so each side just barely touches the gauge. It could be an electrical problem, and as you are doing, it is proper to make sure the electrical side is in good shape before working on the carb, but your symptom sounds as if you are either getting too much air (air leak in manifold or carb) or not enough fuel (jet not completely cleaned out). Of course you could have the carb too lean, but my experience is the adjustment is just not that critical if you are anywhere close to ballpark on the idle and accelerator valves. Do you have a manual? If not, get operator manual and shop manual, and the parts manuals are helpful too. When you had the carb apart, did you pull and thoroughly clean the jet with the staggered small holes, the one that takes a 3/8 deep well socket to remove? It's a key element.

I have had the carb apart several times and cleaned everything that I could think of but I have not seen anything that would require a 3/8" deep well socket to get out. I will take it apart again tomorrow and try and reset the timing once again.

If/when you take the carb off again and seperate the two halves, in the bottom half will be a long skinny brass tube coming up from the bottom at an angle, this is the main and really needs to be taken out and cleaned--this will require a 3/8" deep socket most ofter from a 1/4" drive socket set. (there isn't much room for a thick socket)
Another thing you could look at (do it when your gas is empty or it is a pain to channel the gas into a 5 gal. bucket) is to unscrew your sediment bulb (the glass bulb that shuts fuel flow off) from your gas tank and run a small drill bit (twisting with you fingers NOT in a drill) down the two tubes.-I have a 35 that acts up once every year and it is because I have rust particles in my tank and they eventually pack both tubes shut. While you are cleaning, (I think your 30 has one) but there is a small screen attached to the elbow on the top of your carburator where the fuel line connects to carb. This can get full of crap. Congrats on the fergy.....keep asking questions, there are a lot nice folk on here that are very helpful. God Bless, Mark
Lastly, make sure when you turn the gas on, you turn in on at least 2 whole turns.-my first fergy I would give it 3 quick turns and it would give me fits...I didn't realize that I was only turning it 1/4 turn each time therefore not even making one complete revolution. Just a thought.

you have a carb problem, there must be a plugged jet or a possible partially plugged fuel line, try some of the seafoam in it or I buy stuff called chemtool from TSC, it is the same as seafoam but a little cheaper. If I was you i`d take the carb apart and make sure you have good fuel flow if oyu do then check all the jets and little holes in the carb. I like to use my air compressor and blow gun , helps to blow all the junk out after a good cleaning.

where do you get seafoam or chemtool. I have never heard of any of these products.

TSC carries both, or at least mine does and they are located in the section where the motor oil is. Chemtool can also be found at most parts houses and sometimes at Wally World. It's more commonly known as Berrymans B-12 Chemtool. Really good stuff, highly flamable and pretty reasonbly priced. It comes in a pour can and a spray can. They also carry an awesome parts cleaner in a gallon can that has a parts basket included. Best thing I have ever used to soak a carburetor with, just don't leave anything plastic in it or it will just vanish.
As a note of safety, always use any of these products in a well ventilated area.

To Time Engine:
1. Remove No. 1 spark plug and crank engine until compression stroke creates pressure on finger held in spark plug hole; 2. Remove timing hole button plug and crank slowly until graduated lines in front of the flywheel can be seen. When the line indicating 6 degrees (before top dead center) is aligned with groove in timing hole, the breaker points should then be starting to open. If they are not, then loosen distributor clamp screw and slowly rotate complete distributer until points just break contact. If using a timing light, the maximum advance at 1500 and 2000 rpm should be 23 and 32 degrees respectively.
