Hi All,
My faithful Fergy has served me for many years but like me, is getting a little tired. On a few occasions the shift will fail to engage the starter despite being in the correct position.

Not sure where I eventually got the idea from a long time back but I have welded a few mm of extra length to the end of the gearstick so as to better engage the starter and then has generally worked..but no this time.

Does anyone have clues as to other considerations as to why the starter doesntr engage or am I on thr ight track?

Thanks in advance
Laurie

Hmmm. I haven't seen a TE20 (that I recall) but you obviously have a different plate and I think a Continental engine. If so, there may be many differences to my TEA20-85.

In Queensland TEA20's are much prized antiques. I'd imagine your TE20 in New South Wales would be a vast improvement over the usual horse drawn agricultural implements. LOL

At least you can hitch the missus up to an implement. I can't even hitch The Cook up to the ironing board! And I'm yet to think how I tell her I'm thinking of buying a restored MGA sports car!

Give me a call or email sometime. Love to have a chat as I'm sure we have common interests. I too am a few years older than my 1953 TEA20! And I've collected a wealth of repair and restoration details on my Fergy which I would happily share with you.

To check if it is the Switch that is faulty, you need to crudely stick a heavy spanner across the two terminals, if it starts the switch is faulty and should be changed. Do make sure that it is not switched on or in gear when you try this and make sure there is nothing flammable around as there can be a few sparks. If you have a meter for testing circuits then disconnect the main battery lead and put the meter across the terminals and operate the gear lever it should complete the circuit if it doesn't then change the switch. If you need more info on this email me at fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk
ask me for the information about that switch. New switches are still available from Sparex dealers as part S42538. you don't say where you are so we cant tell you who would have one. This site also has them look under Ferguson parts.

As I recently learned from John(UK) - the starter switch on top of the bell housing is adjustable, forward and backwards (left to right in the photo). The starter switch can also be disassembled and cleaned (three screws on top).

Is the switch clean internally and the switch correctly adjusted?

Thanks very much for the feedback all and especially the photo of the switch Bob.

I can consistently engage the starter by using a screwdriver inserted into the gearshift opening so that has eliminated a switch problem and highlighted a mechanical issue.

All of this time I have been welding a little length to the gearshift reach so as to push the engaging slide further back to the switch when as Bob pointed out the adjustment can be done much more easily from the switch end. Thats where I'll head.

Many thanks again. A great forum.

PS My TEA20 must be a very early model with a serial number of around 2400 from memory. It would have been built around 1946 or 1947?

Laurie. Another Aussie!!!

I'm in Roma, Queensland and I have a July 1953 TEA2085, Ser No TEA 341439.

I'm no mechanic but Fergy has been the other woman in my life for over 20 years and I've learned a few of her intimate secrets. And this little old gray woman doesn't nag me or yell back if I abuse her!

If I can help in any way, anytime, mobile 0428 889098, email bfulton(at)goldenwest.org.au

Ser No 24000 would be a 1947 TE20. Does that have a Standard engine or Continental engine?

Hi Bob,
There is an original light metal plate (about 6cmx8cm) rivetted on the cover just forward of the steering wheel shaft. On it is the number 2588 stamped in large numbers. I've assumed this was the serial number but maybe not. I've also always assumed it has a standard engine.

I've forgotten the difference between the TE20 and TEA20 but believe mine is TEA20.

Good to hear from a fellow Fergy lover and an aussie to boot. My TEA20 thinks its a D8 and I haven't had the heart to tell it the truth!

This is what you are looking for. Sounds like you have a 1947 TE20. That would be a modern tractor for New South Wales!!! LOL

Bob,
Yep thats the plate that I'm referring to only mine now is only legible as far as the numbers are concerned which are solidly punched into the plate. They are larger than in your photo and run vertically down the left hand side of the plate.

And any tractor no matter how old is faster than hitching up my wife to some impliments...and it doesnt whinge either!

On a TE20 with a Continental engine the oil filler is at the left front side forward of the distributor, on the Standard engine TEA the oil filler is at the left rear end of the Cylinder Block, above the starter.

Thanks for the feedback Bob and John. Bob if you are half as good a mechanic as you are a photographer you are a clever fellow.

Mt oil filler is oabove the starter as per the photo so looks like I have Standard engine. Does this confirm that I have a TEA20 then? What is the difference between TE20 and TEA20?

Err, John, did you get this correct?

"...with a Continental engine the oil filler is at the left front side forward of the distributor, on the Standard engine TEA the oil filler is at the left rear end of the Cylinder Block, above the starter."

Or does my TEA20 have a Standard Continental engine?

LOL
