Sounds like you neeed to retime your distributor. First you have to get the #1 cylinder on the compression stroke. (Remeber on a 4 stroke cycle, it takes two revs of the crankshaft to get to the sucessive compression stroke so yu pass the timing mark twice.)
Pull the plug on #1, hold your thumb over the spark plug hole and nudge the starter til you feel pressure building on your thumb. Your on the compression stroke. Now look in the timing window and using a wrench on the crankshaft nut crank the engine to the timing mark. When the timing mark lines up with the notch in the hole, stop. the rotor on the distributor should be pointing near to the terminal in the distributor cap where the #1 plug wire terminates. Now take a paper clip or a bent wire and put it in the spark plug boot for #1 so that it touches the conductor. carefully loosen the distributor hold down bolt so you can turn the distributor. Turn on the ignition, hold the #1 plug wire with the paper clip near a good ground , turn on the ignition, and rotate the distributor back and forth slightly til you hear the loud snap of the #1 plug fire. At that point you are statically timed. You may have to do it several times to get it correct and when you do, carefully tighten down the distributor hold down bolt and try a start. Use your timing light to verify the timing and also check to see that your centrifugal advance is working by reving the engine and see the timing advance.

thanks for the great info-will post what happens-at least the engine is not seized up, but it turns over kind of slow even with a new battery. So when we get it started, will post what noises are happening-with a hope and a prayer, it will run OK, but im thinking at least something has to be replaced after it being run out of oil 2 years ago. I found out why all the chaulk was hangin out of the oilpan -oil filter cover-they must have hit a rock or stump because its all bent up-i not critizing them, it is what it is--found a replacement oil pan cover locally, had to buy the whole thing, both componets--$40. With new gasket from this site, another $12 with shipping.

thanks again
