HELP !!!I have a "59 TO35 Deluxe with a Z134 gas engine. Yesterday,as I atempted to start the engine She backfired and then just clicked the starter.Since I was parked on the gravel drive with a downgrade I tried a rolling start but just skidded the rear wheels. I also tried to turn the engine by the crank pulley but with no results.I had started earlier in the day with no problem and only had driven a short distance to bring a small trailer to the garage to work on.Does anyone have any idea what could have hapened? What should I check 1st?I did pull the plugs but found nothing.I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worse.

Good call guys. I pulled the starter and the nose was broken off. I was able to find a large piece with bushing after removing the inspection plate under the clutch. I don't know if that was the only piece till I go back to the local re-build shop to check fit with the broken one. The engine turns freely now and I havn't been able to find any more pieces.

I agree with Gregg, try to pull your starter out. I've seen more than a couple posts where the starter jambs-up on a flywheel with a ring gear kicking off the flywheel.

Can you crank it over by hand with the spark plugs removed and trans in neutral with the clutch depressed?

I did pull the plugs to check if maybe a jug full of gas.Since the plugs were dry I didn"t try turning it over with them out.Was that what you were thinking? I"ll stil give that a try.
