TO20 brakes

I have A TO20 the brakes will stop the tractor but the steering brakes dont seem to work as good as they should are there any adjustments for the brakes or do I need new brake shoes? Im almost sure there original brakes when the tractor was bought new. thanks Robert

Well George looks like Im going to have to dive into the seal job too oil around one of my hubs. Will a local tractor shop have the sure seals you think or will it have to be ordered? thanks for the reply Iv got it all printed out. Ps should the same amount of shims go back as long as the gaskets are the same thickness?

sure seals can be bought at any tractor dealer that handles Tisco parts, like a Ford N.H., or Agco (Massey). You can also get them on the net for several places, I got a good deal on mine on Ebay. This site does not sell them for some reason....
shims - The simple answer is "yes", same gasket material, should use the same shims. However, you may, or may not have old gaskets to look at, or they might be mashed flat, or difficult to match the thickness. If you don't have a manual, get one before you start, the axle shafts are pre-loaded(binding against each other)to a slight degree when installed correctly, the manual works you thru how the wheels should affect each other when both are jacked-off the ground. There is nothing wrong with using a little silicone gasket maker goop between your shims & backing plate to make sure they are leakfree. You do not need any goop on the sure seal install into the hub.

Your problem most likely is that the pivot joints on the end of the Independent brake pedals are seized up. To check this, LIFT each independent brake pedal one at a time and see if the brake rod, on the same side, that runs alongside the Transmission bends at all, if it does the joints are seized. They can be very awkward to free off, but well worth it when they are done.....John

Robert, your TO brakes have adjuster stars, just like cars & trucks of the era. Look on the back side of your backing plate, you should see a slot for the brake adjuster. Might have a rubber grommet stuck in the adjuster slot that you would need to pull first. Stick a thin screwdriver in the slot & rotate the the star adjuster. You need to jack-up both tires to adjust the brakes correctly. Your axles have some load on each other and won't freewheel easily if only one tire is off the ground. If your lucky, your adjusters are not all caked-up with crud and will still turn. Your steering peddles should lock-up each wheel with a good stomp so that you can pivot in a circle about your locked tire.... ever see a tractor square dance? Your TO should be able to square dance when your brakes are in good working order.
