After reading all the thread below about pos. v neg. ground, I just may try it even though I think my tractor (FE35) is fine. So, what are the steps to convert to pos. ground? Also how will it affect the electronic ignition? Thanx, Cosmo

Mark. My 1953 TEA2085 (Standard engine) is 12 volts. Don't know if Pertronics build a 6 volt igniter. Mine is the unit recommended for the TEA20 and is strictly negative earth, so I guess they don't build a positive earth system.

OKAY! OKAY! :) I'll leave it alone. As I told John(UK) a couple of days ago it runs fine so why change it. It is 12 volt neg. ground with new pertronix ignition. It starts instantly and runs around the yard okay. I haven't had the opportunity to test it with a real load yet. Thanks to John(UK) and all of you for the warnings. Cosmo

Cosmo, Is your system currently a 6 volt positive ground? I'm glad you brought this up, I am considering a similar purchase. Thanks.

If you have electronic ignition DO NOT SWAP THE GROUND or it will damage it beyond repair. Your engine should be running just fine with electronic Ignition if it isn't, tell us what it is doing as it will most likely be something else.

I have a Pertronics LU-145 electronic ignition and Pertronics coil on my TEA20 - and love it!!!

Best piece of kit I ever bought for the old girl!!!!! Starts incredibly easy, runs smoother and revs quicker!

No points or condenser to worry about and a big fat spark to fry your socks if you put your finger in the wrong place! I also want to play with increasing the spark plug gap for better ignition.

The Pertronics electronic igniter MUST run negative earth. You can try it positive earth but it would be more fun to stand outside on a cold day and set fire to a $100 bill!!!

To convert to negative earth really is very easy, very simple and very quick. I have one of John (UK) excellent advice sheets and suggest you contact him by email and ask for his "How to Polarise a Generator" advice sheet.

And don't do what I did many years ago when I converted my Fergy - don't forget to change coil polarity or you will have a decade of starting problems, as I did!!!

If you want the Pertronics igniter instruction sheet, email me bfulton(at) goldenwest.org.au

Bob (Aust),
Is your 20 a 6 volter??
And it did make a huge difference?
My 6 volter actually runs and starts fine..but..she is my old workhorse and I would like to save gas and have the reliability when I haul her to someones house to rototill and not have to cross my fingers just before I push the starter button. sound familiar? Ha Ha

A specific electronic ignition module is made for ONE ground polarity ONLY.

Swapping the ground polarity to the polarity opposite what the module is made for will only "let all the smoke out" of the module and render it useless.

Pertronix ignition calls for neg. ground, I don't know what will happen if you swap to pos.- good luck-ed

If you have an alternator, don't try to convert it. If you have a generator, there are three steps: swap the battery wires of course; swap the two wires on the ammeter; and swap the primary wires on the coil. The primary (small) wire from the coil to the distributor should be the same polarity as the ground. Hope that helps.
