I have 2 questions. First will a Ford exhaust off a 2-8-9N part #8N5230 fit on a Ferguson TO-20 1951? My second question is about sure seals. I am confused on how long these sure seals will last. I know that with a regular seal the transmission oil lubricates the barrons. With the sure seal the oil can't get the barrons so how long will that last? Are you better off with the sure seal or go have the barron and seal pressed off and new one pressed back on? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Tim

I've heard reports of sure seals lasting quite a long time (many years). I've had sure seals in my TO20 for ~3 years now with good results so far. There are lots of TO20's & 9N's running around with sure seals, they work. Can't say which way is better... sure seals vs. original style axle seal. Probably about the same, but the sure seal install is a breeze compared to installing the original seal. The other guys are right, you will need to pack your wheel bearing with grease the best you can before installing sure seals. It is possible, even likely that much of your oil leakage is thru the backing plate/axle hub gasket/shims as much as the seal itself. The axle hub isn't torqued down that tight and the nuts tend to back-off over time from backing/forward stresses. George

Be sure to use short fiber grease in the bearings before you install the "Sure Seals". Short fiber grease is recommended for wheel bearings on cars with drum brakes. The hard part is trying to force grese into the bearings with the retainer collar in the way. It can be done. Use a 3 foot section of (3"?)ABS plastic pipe to help facilitate seal installation. Also make sure the seals have a tapered edge on the ends to make installation easier.

SureSeals are lubricated by the oil from the rear end. Since the oil can no longer get to the outer bearing, you pack them in grease like on a wagon or on the front wheels of a rear wheel drive car. Even if you put on a new bearing, you still have to use sure seals to keep the oil from running through the bearing and out in to into the brake drum. The Ferguson 30 went to this arangement with an inner an outer seal and packed bearing. As for the exhaust, if you're talking about the exhaust pipe and muffler and not about the exhaust manifold, I think the Ferguson is slightly longer to the curve and has a slight bend in it where the Ford is straight down. Someone might correct me on this.

I believe Irv is correct on the muffler. The Ferguson needs a longer drop before the bend.
