i have a h ferguson the tractor has been converted to 12 volt but the starter it still 6 volt, the problem is it has been breaking the starter housing,is it just to much for the starter,or could it be the starter going bad , thanks marvin

thanks guys, i took the starter in to work took it apart and sure enough there was no washer on drivegear end ,i welded up the houseing ,cleaned up the brushes ,put it back togather,will see what happens, thanks for the info , marvin

this issue has been discussed before so look in the archives. I have a TO-30 with a 12 V system and the original 6 V starter and have had no problems in 10 years of operation.
Do an archive search. I believe someone said there needs to be a washer between the drive gear and the nose piece on the starter housing and many times rebuilt starters do not have them.

Two things I did when my TO30 started that bad habit was shim the starter out by cutting shims from a pop can and shim the starter out a little. The second was make sure the timming was spot on.
I had a professional assistant ad used the I&T FE 22 manual. No problems sincce.

ok so i welded up the cone put in the shims, went to put the starter in but the distributor was in the way ,pulled the distributor being carefull, it got turned ,so other then what it says in the tune up guide any other tricks that will get me back up and running thanks marvin,
