TE 20 Horsepower

Someone told me that the TE's came in 16hp engine for the 6 volt models and 18hp for the 12 volts models.

Also they claimed the 18hp has plentiful parts supply but the 16 hp engine is more difficult to find parts.

I was under the impression that the only 2 petrol engines were offered, the Continental 120 and the Standard engine and that these were offered in either 6 or 12 volt tractors.

Can anyone clarify the matter for me please.

all te20 tractors came with the continental z120 engine. they all had 23.9 hp. the tea20 tractors came with 2 different sizes 80mm bore-23.9 hp and 85mm bore-28.2 hp. there is no difference between 6v and 12v horsepower as far as i know.

I am not really certain what to think of the horsepower ratings. I hauled some huge locust trunks up a fairly steep hill this weekend with the throttle barely open. How can these tractors with such low horsepower do it? Is it all in the transmision?

As I understand it there are 2 aspects of engine power. One is the power output as expressed in horsepower or kilowatts and the other is torque.

Most ride on mowers develop between 11 and 16 HP these days yet try to pull anything other than a small trailer and your struggling.

The reason is that tractor engines develop little power but loads of torque. I believe that the greater the stroke the greater the potential torque.

Torque is a measurement of the engine potential twisting power as I understand it.
