Oil Pump

My oil pressure is fine. But having read several posts about the risks of a faulty pump. . . would your pressure guage show if your pump was beginning to fail? How do you watch for this without dismantling anything?

Secondly, is there a mechanical or electrical tach I could install on my TO30?

The pressure gauge if it is working correctly will tell you what the pressure is in the engine, if it is falling then you have to find out why, but you will know that it is getting lower so you can take some action.

Your oil pressure gauge will only show that your oil presure has dropped. It isn't necessarily due to the pump wearing, though that is a possibility. The main bearings could be wearing out or maybe the relief valve spring has broken. Whatever the cause, the manual says that the oil pressure at lo idle(400rpm) with the engine at operating temperature should not be less that 15 psi. When that hapens, you need to findout why that is. It could be a simple as a worn oil pump or it could be some of the other reasons I listed. In the mean time, enjoy your tractor.

The pump usually just wears slowly over time, so your pressure slowly drops over time. 10 years from now, when you are only getting ~5 psi at hot idle... it's time to rebuild the pump.

Here is a tach I added to my TO a few years back. Worked great, but the internal battery only lasted ~2 years, replacing the battery is pretty tough, it is essentially a disposable tach. But after looking at it for a couple years... I can pretty much tell the RPMs by ear now.

Oh loook!!! It's on sale too! I might need to get another one.

If you're really worried about your oil pump going out and you not noticing you could always put a tee where your gauge tube goes into the engine block and add a pressure switch so that your ignition shuts off when pressure drops below 5 psi or so.

I'm sure you can find an aftermarket electric tach to install if you want one. If you just need to know engine speed for your tune-up the factory service manual (well, the cheap copy I have) describes how to chock up one rear wheel, paint a stripe on the tire, and count revolutions to determine engine RPM.

by the way...if you're showing good oil pressure, your pump is probably ok.
