Recommend Oil Filter Option

I see the spin on oil filter kits with filter for around $40 with shipping. Is there a cheaper route? I.e., where to get the same parts at a local farm store etc?

And for the existing filters. Is there a filter I can get w/o having a MF dealer nearby that is equivalent?

Any advice on if I should or should not convert to one of these kits for the spin on filter?

I put a spin on adapter/filter on my TO-30 last year. I just got tired of the effort to change the filter with the OEM filter housing. Mine is a working machine not a show tractor and I use it on my ranch. The less work I have to do ON it, the more work I can do WITH it.
I don't use it in the woods since I have a grass ranch, but Gerald makes a good point for those folks who use there machines in a wooded area. I will say this about the kit. The neoprene gasket tht came with the kit from YT Tractor Parts DID NOT FIT! It was too big. I called them up and they said it was supposed to be correct. That really helped. I told them to send me an extra filter for the trouble and I would make a gasket and send them a drawing of what the gasket needed to look like. They did and I did. Hopefully they they got their Peking supplier to make the correct gasket.

I have a several year supply of filter element for the original canister. It does take some care to assemble the canister properly so it doesn't leak. Primarily the can has to go in the hole in the side of the block resting on the gasket, can't catch on the outside of the block. That doesn't bother me, I learned that care some 50 years ago on my dad's new 1954 Ford.

Canister elements are generally a lot less expensive than the screw on filters that would replace them on the tractor. These tractor filters are bypass, not full flow. The common automotive screw on filters are full flow and don't have the pressure drop of the bypass filter. That can mess up the oil pressure regulator in some tractors leading to very low oil pressure. The last I looked through a good oil filter catalog, there was only one screw on filter made for a bypass system and it was on the expensive side.

$40 will buy 8 or ten cartridges. A decade supply for most vintage fergies.

The steel of the canister is many times thicker than that of the screw on filter so will stand up to abuse much better. Its no fun loosing an oil filter from a close encounter with a sapling out in the woods.

Thanks. This is the help I needed to make the decision. My land is mostly wooded. It was all forest except for the mining road before I opened a an area for my house.
