Valve Caps?

I've stripped two TO30 heads and haven't found any valve stem caps as shown in the master parts catolog.I bought new valves thinking I'd get everything. Did I need to order these seperatly?Are they nessasary? How did these two tractors run for any length of time without them? Thanks in advance. Haze

Yeah, both heads had been running without caps and the ends were not mashed that bad.Wish I had them, but the wife's starting to pay attention again.Thanks fellers.

These engines were made to work hard, virtually forever. I think the caps were there to prevent the valve stem ends from mushrooming out over time. I imagine you can adjust the valve clearance to tolerence without the caps with a couple turns of the setscrew on the rockers. I talked to a couple tractor mechanics when I rebuilt mine that said I didn't need the caps & could leave them out if I wanted. I was looking to buy new caps, rather than reuse my old ones. In the end, I just reused the old ones. One of those old guys told me if I couldn't find new caps, to take a valve to a good auto parts place and check thru boxes of caps for fit.... I think the guy told me caps from ~1960? Rambler? would fit on my TO-20 valves... not sure on that though.

Not all engines had the Rotating valves, you can usually check this by looking if there is a pin through the Valve Stem or if it has split tapered collars that they sometimes fit in service. The ones with the Pin through did have caps originally as that type rotates.

I think what you are refering to are "rotators". These were designed to slightly rotate the valve every time it was opened. They are not necessary (e.g., modern engines don't use them anymore), if you can get proper adjustment without them and depending upon what rebuild parts are used, they may not fit either. I notice that the Sparex catalog states that rotators CANNOT be used with their valve train rebuild kits; I don't know exactly why, but I would presume that the valve stems are longer. Jim

Jim, I think he's talking about part no.'s 1 750 060 M1, & 1 750 071 M1 "Cap, Valve Stem" & "Cap, Exhaust Valve Stem" respectively. The rotators are something else.

Thanks.. I guess I assumed they were rotators... (still might be from John's post and the fact that Sparex comments on them)... but I really don't know... I have mine off and I think that they are more than one piece which is why I was thinking that they were rotators and not just "caps"... Jim

Nope. If you look in the parts manual they are shown on both the exhaust and the intake valves. The rotators are a separate item and are only on the exhaust valves. When I replaced my engine, I found one sitting below the rocker assembly on the top of the head. It came of the #1 intake valve. Don't know how long it had been sitting there.

I think george got it right. They were probably there to preclude wear on the valve stems so they are probably made from some hardened material.

I looked at mine and I only have the caps.. they are not the two piece things that I thought I had. There are two different sizes for exhaust and intake... Jim
