Got the TO 20 up an running. She sounds pretty good....However, I do have a question, and am not sure if its governor related or not. I installed a new ball type governor when reasemmbling the engine....After reading the in depth service and owners manuals, as well as input from here, I wanted to wait until I got some more advice from you all before I start tearing into it. The problem is that I don't think the throttle responds as quick as it should. I realize its a tractor, and not a sports car, but I feel the engine should be reacting faster to throttle movement. At low idle she sounds sweet. After it kicks in, she even sounds ok at higher rpms. I found that I am able to take off in all gears..... Is this a governor issue? I rebuilt the carb, and gas wizzes out of the drain spout when I loosen it...Also have an inline filter on gas line. The timing may be off a little, and I still have to do the final valve adjustments (as I only did them cold when reasemmbling. What should I do? Also, any input on going to 12 volt????? ?? Thanks, Mike McMurray

Regarding your 12V conversion, I can give you a lot of info on that since I just went through it. Working out the mounting bracket for the alternator is the biggest challenge, and I can save you a huge amount of time and frustration on that. Let me know.

To do a simple check on whether the governor is operating, engage second gear with the brake pedal held down and open the throttle to about 1/3rd open and watch the vertical lever from the governor at the back of the Generator, this should move forward and open the throttle, if it doesn't, the throttle linkage will need resetting. If the engine runs ok and isn't running too rich or too weak, it maybe is ignition timing (I can send that too)but it does sound like governor settings. If you need the information to reset the governor or Ignition, email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk this will give me your email address so I can send it to you.....John

The governor responds best with some RPM's, half throttle or better. Below that it is sluggish. I like the idea of checking you timing before cranking on the gov. bumper screw. Do the governor adjustment routine in the manual if you haven't already done so. Taking off in all gears, sounds like your gov. is working pretty good.

I've checked my valves cold & hot and have always found them to be good hot, as long as you do a good job cold. To me it's one or the other, but don't need to do both hot and cold.. unless you just want to... which I did too.

12V is in the eye of the beholder. 6V does the job just dandy if maintained. I clean my wire terminals once/year and coat lightly with terminal grease and never have trouble starting even on those near zero days. I am NOT happy with the fairly poor lighting I get with my 6V system. I can run the headlights, or the rear work lights, but not both at the same time... unless I want weak yeller lights and my amp meter in the red (discharge). I'd love to have 12V system with more amps, some big off-road 12V lights front & rear to light up the night, a horn, and power to run a 12V sprayer pump... all at the same time! I figure if my generator ever dies, I'll probably convert to 12V, but as long as it's working it ain't worth the expense. You have to make your own call what you want.

George

There are a couple ways to check the action of a governor. #1 Watch your governor operating lever. When you go from idle to full throttle it should snap back as the engine starts to rev up.# 2- After the engine is warmed up,place the throttle about half open. With it in high gear and the brakes locked, slowly release the clutch. If all is properly adjusted you should be able to see the governor operating lever moving ahead. If you have no action you may have to turn the bumper adjusting screw out.For the governor to work properly all of the parts have to be there,i.e. compensator spring and link, with no parts binding.

Before you fiddle with the governor, get your timing correct and your carb adjusted properly. If you have hesitation or coughing on accel,it's most likely a mixture problem. Just plain slow accel could be improper timing or a malfunctioning advance mwechanism.

Personally, I like a 12V system and I easily went to electronic ignition after I had the distributor rebuilt. If your a purist stay with 6V but you really have to keep the ignition system up to snuff because there is very little margin with 6V.

I've been chasing the opposite and have learned I'm missing a spring on the gov linkage. My tractor revs up way too fast and on its own some times. I followed the adjustment proceedure supplied by John (UK) and its working better but not right. I suspect it will not be right untill I get the missing spring.

No, not really a sputter. I have been following the recommended settings per the manual for both the main adjusting screw and the idle adjust.....I have even deviated on the high and low ends of both adjustments just to see if that cleared it up..... .all of the linkages for the gov. assembly appear to move without binding....thanks, mike

Are you talking about a sputter when you pull down on the throttle? Could it be the main on the carb is a little lean.? When warm and at half throttle-she should respond quickly without hesitation when the throttle is quickly pulled wide open. Maybe open the main an eighth of a turn and try again. Hope this is helpful. Mark
