Installed my now 12 volt genny on my 6 volt tractor and get the following:
Tractor battery not running 6.5 volts. Voltage measured at battery with Genny charging between 8 and 8.5 volts. The ammeter used to just show a discharge. Now it does untill the rpms come up and then the genny kicks in and ammeter raises to 0. I see this even with all the lights on. Have not seen it above 0. Does this sound right?? Results from tractor setting in shop, not driven.

I put an alternator on my 8n and it starts out with about a 30 amp charge and then settles down. My 2n has a weak genny that only makes 5.5 volts and has to run about wide open to reach 0. Need to rebuild this one next

Guess I'll leave it alone untill the VR or coil fails and then I'll install the remainder of the 12 volt parts (coil, regulator, and light bulbs)
I have a modification to make on my exhaust and my new retractable from bumper is on so pix this weekend after the exhaust is done

John, Hi!, Glad to here you are making progress.
If you are at 8 volts on the battery then it charging and should reflect this on the gauge. Mine goes half way to the right when first started and tapers off to a hair above 0. I have 2 suggestions. The charge line between the batt. and the gen. has to run through thhe amp gauge to get it to show + charge. you may have rerouted the circut. ( done this once myself) and all it would show was discharge. or the gauge is bad (not likly). Regards-ed

John I'm a bit confused by your post. You say you installed a 12 V genny on a 6 Volt electrical system? I guess you left the 6 volt voltage regulator on it to get those voltage numbers at the battery. While I'm no charging system expert, they sound about 1 volt too high but it depends on the resistance in the charging circuit. Just out of curiosity, why have you gone to a 12v generator for a 6 volt system? do you plan to eventually go toa 12V system?

Your 8N with the alternator sounds like my TO-30 with an alternator. After the engine starts, the current is real high to make up for the starter draw and then it settles in zero range.

Jerry,
The tractor is 6 volt. I bought 12 volt fields for the genny some time back and planned on converting to 6 volt. Having most everything working now on the tractor as expected I moved on to the electrical. I recently hooked up a working ammeter and confirmed my belief that it was not charging. I cut a hole in the back of the dash as my hands do not fit in the dash. After testing I decided it was the genny and took the genny to a local tractor shop for testing and gave the guy my 12v fields. The armature was bad so he rebuilt it using my new 12v fields and a rebuilt armature for 12 volt, and the new brushes and bearings I had. The guy is about 85 and has a great reputation and is always busy. I just wanted to put it back on and see if it would charge without adding more variables like a different VR and monkeying with the wiring. I was a machine tool mechanic/electrician for a long time with lots of electrical background and I prefer only changing 1 thing at a time when trouble shooting when possible. Now that I know it works I'll go back and repalce the VR, Coil, Battery, and lights.

I saw your other post after I posted my reply and I figured out that was your plan.
You're very wise to change only one variable at a time to see what the system response is. So many people change five at a time and then guess at what the problem was. Systematic troubleshooting will get you to the root cause of the problem quicker and cheaper then the "change everything at once approach".

No problem, I'm guessing the old VR dumping off the xtra voltage is bound to get hot and not last long.
