I have my genny back from the shop. The mechanic noted that my armature was bad. The rear bushing was long worn out and the armature had been running against the fields for a long time. I had the parts to convert to 12 volt (fields and brushes) and he ended up needing them and a rebuilt armature so she's ready to go as 12 volt now. (It was 6 volt when I took it in)

Would you install as is and see if it charges before converting the rest of the tractor to 12 volt? The 6 volt regulator should drop off the excess voltage right?

John, hello, My opinion is yes the regulator will hold the volts down to the 6volt range. I've run mine on 6-8-12 volt batterys and i'm still using the generator that came on the tractor 25 years ago. all i did was adjust or change the regulator.
The Duke said he agrees. LOL -ed

I used to be a factory rep for industrial machine tools and foundry equipment as well. I don't like adding more variables than are necessary. As strange as it may sound I'd like to install it and see if everything else (charging circuit) is working before introducing a different voltage regulator to the equation. I'll also replace the last 2 wires on the tractor that run to the genny

John, Hi!,Sounds like a plan to me, I agree. You will probably have to polarize the gen. to get it to charge ( usually done at the reg.)But you probably know that,I'm tired and better go to bed. Good luck, -ed
