Ok was able to pull the new toy into the garage and change the oil and replace the Pressure gauge. siting around 8-11 idle and 24 at 1/2 - 3/4. Now the only issues is heat, the temp gauge did not go real high and the block seemed to not be real hot. But I pulled a emply hay wagon about 1/4 miles down the road at night and the exhaust Man was glowing red. Is this normal for this to get go hot? Like I said she was running fine an temp gauge was not realy moving much, block did not seem overly hot. Just the exhaust man and pipe was glowing. It was night so I was able to see it real well. Not sure if I would have noticed if it was day time.

That glowing manifold is most likely caused by an overly lean mixture and/or retarded timing. Fix it before you burn the exhaust valve. Your power jet( the big screw) needs to be 1-1/8 to 1-1/4 turns from full close and no less tha 1 full turn. The Continental engine depends on a slightly richer mixture for charge cooling so you don't want to run too lean. A retarded spark, beside reducing power, delays the spark so that the mixture is still burning as the exhaust valves start to open leading to hotter than normal exhaust valves and manifold.

You should have a thermostat in the rubber hose between the top of the head and the radiatir. With the tractor shutdown squeeze the hose and see if you can feel it in there. If it's there , it maybe stuck open. make sure it working because the quickest way to sludge up and wear out an engine is to run it too cold. It needs to run at it's designoperating temperature and the thermostat is what allows it to do so.

If your oil pressure is accurate, your main bearings and/or your oil pump are worn. Hot idle oil pressure should not be under 15 psi. What weight oil are you using?

OK, will check carb tonight. My idle pressure is under 15. Around 8-11 at idle and 24 and 1/2 to 3/4 throttle.

This tractor has a new radiator and hose coming from head to radiator. I am wondering if they put the thermostat back in there. I will have to check tonight. You say it sit in the radiator hose? or bolted to the head and hose goes onto it?

It is unlike a car and doesn not sit in a "wel" in the head but fits in the hose itself. Squeeze the hose and you should be able to feel it if it's there. They're about $10 if you need to get one. Part Number is 181 634 M1.

BINGO! No thermostat and screw on carb was out 3.5 turns. Will order thermostat and manual to find out how to check timing.

If your power jet was 3-1/2 turns out you should have been running rich, not lean. When you get a manual, pick up a timing light also. You'll need it!

bralos...there was a similar post on here a few days ago about a glowing manifold. the answer i saw was that it was due to a very lean set carb. if i remember right.

Always ran Continental engines until the cylinder head temps were under 350 F and the turbos ceased to glow.

And that was in Cessna aircraft! :-)

A lesson with Continentals (and most engines) - gas is far cheaper than the damage a lean engine will cause!

Moved on from Continental engine powered aircraft, they were a great engine with TLC, but glad my TEA20 has a Standard engine. It's unbreakable!!
