TE20 lift arms stuck up!

Living in Iowa I have been blading a lot of snow this past month and it has been very cold. I parked my tractor several days ago in the shed after doing some snow removal. I left the blade in the up position, knowing it would leak down in a couple of hrs. I went back 2 days later to use it again and the blade was still up! I warmed up the tractor and found that the lift arms wouldn't budge. I tried shaking it, and standing on it, but still wouldn't go down,. I put a heat lamp on the housing and left it on for 2 days and it finally came back down and works ok again. Could anyone please tell me what happened and how I can avoid this happening again? Thanks for any info or suggestions.

Thanks for all the info. I haven't had a chance to get inside an look at yet. The blade is now going down ok, but I have to hold the lever down to keep it down. The lever keeps wanting to pop back up, bringing the blade back up as well! It has never done this before!
I don't know if this sheds any new light on the problem or not.

Sounds like the fricton disc is slipping. You can tighten it easily. Remove the cottor pin and tighten the castle nut until the fingertip control lever will stay in position. If the clutch material is gone or oil soaked, replace it with cork gasket material.

Could be the return spring is unhooked it goes from the linkage to the bottom of the lift cylinder. Or the quadrant lever needs adjustment. regards

If you remove the inspection cover on the right side of the transaxle case, you will see the relief valve. You can remove it from there, it is RH thread. The hyds. bleed off by opening this valve. Inspect it for wear and a varnish that causes sticking. When the valve sticks shut, the hyds. act this way. The only way the lift arms will go down then is because of leakage within the system, ie: the lift piston/cylinder assy. You can buy an O&M manual for approx. $20. Fergs. aren't they a great little tractor.

I think there are a couple things that can go wrong one of which is water in the hyd fluid also could be damage or wear to linkage. Only real way to find out is to take it apart I would start by taking off the pto lever cover on the left side and look to see any fluid leaking or swirling around the relief valve. The archives here cover a pump teardown pretty well. You can use diesel or kerosene to rinse out gunk in bottom of casing remember some of these have not been apart for years and lots of dirt gets in bottom.

i have the same problem also. its not from water as i changed fluid in the fall and kept it inside since. i have heated it up & that didn't help a bit. maybe the linkage came apart. there are BIG snowdrifts in my driveway so i'll have to get on it asap.

You probably have water in the hyd fluid can be from condensation and leaking around shift lever if left in rain. Only way to really fix is drain fluid and replace every couple of years. regards
