Hi Guys, Noticed a missing bolt yesterday and then found some others broken ( see photo) on the rear axle housing only on one side of the tractor. There are 4 broken studs with 2 intact left in place but I am unsure how to replace the broken ones. Do I need to remove the complete LHS housing to get to these studs? I did notice that everything is still together even though 4 studs are missing so could I just plug up the stud holes and pretend everything is ok until something happens? I did have a broken front axle recently on the same side so the shock of hitting the ground must have been too much for Mr Ferguson (he is not a girl)
Some advice would be appreciated from Coonabarabran (south of Texas)
Tony

If you remove the l/h trumpet housing you should be able to get hold of the broken part of the stud that is sticking out and you should be able to unscrew it and fit new ones. You can't get at the inside end of these studs as they are in a casting and are blanked off. If you leave it as it is you could find that the other studs will break and the whole tractor will drop and do a lot of damage to the Diff and Axle-shaft. It will be cheaper to do the work now.

Hi John, Seems like I am up to where I disconnect the LHS axle to get the trumpet of so I can get the axle out. There is mention of how to do this in my manual but there is not a lot of detail apart from take the seat of and then the lid. it appears that the only way to get to the studs is by taking the axle off and then go from there. Am I heading in the right direction?
Your assistance is appreciated
Tony

Yes you are going in the right direction, if you email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk
if you write again I will be able to send pictures and other information if it is required.
Be careful when you come to take that housing off the tractor as it is quite heavy.
The Service Manuals are made for the tractor fitters really, they are not very good for the the man who occasionally has to repair his tractor, you really need to have some knowledge of the mechanics of the tractor first. Someone really needs to write one in plain simple language so there will be no mistakes.

OK John have sent you a email with a couple of photos of where I am up to, you were right that top cover is heavy and it does not just come off, there is something stuck to it on the inside, hope I can find my way back from here the missus will be on to me if I F=== up. I managed to have a look down inside there but could not see the rear axle. as I said in my email I could ring up the tractor place and for $1500 - $2000 it could be fixed in a couple of days but I would rather have a go at it myself.

Thanks John for all that information, this will keep me busy for a while and I am thinking to replace the brake linings while I have the tractor in the shed pulled apart. Will order gaskets through Bare Co who seem to be the Ferguson parts place in Aus. Will also have a look at the gasket at the PTO as it was leaking badly there. Will post an update in a few days.

Yes BareCo are the place for Ferguson spares in Australia but Sparex are there too, I think that they supply BareCo with some parts, but no matter, just get the parts where you can. If you need anymore information, just email again. Just be careful with the heavy parts that you don't hurt yourself. The oil leak from the PTO, maybe the oil seal on the shaft or the "O" ring outside the bearing housing, check the bearing on the shaft too as this could cause the seal to leak if it is worn and running rough.

When you do the work, make sure that you do replace all the gaskets or it will leak. The gaskets at the Brake Drum end should be fitted one either side of the Brake Back Plate and the shims go next to the trumpet housing. I only tell you that because you would be surprised as to how many get that wrong. The gaskets are available from Sparex dealers if you need them or your local MF dealer may have them. If you need part numbers just ask.
