I have a tea 20, lucas electrics 12 volt, has always had negative ground, i just bought a service manual it shows a positive ground, so mine is hooked wrong?It has been like this ever since i bought it but i have always had charging problems as well, so should it be positive ground?

Thanks guys just got home been gone all day, this is a 53 tea 20 i believe, it has been like this forever.The school board had it for years , i remember seeing it when i was a kid going to school, they used it for plowing snow.Then a fellow bought it off them at a auction, he used it for snow plowing as well, then i got it from him, it has always been a 12 volt negative ground with a genny, so you can imagine my surprise when i read the shop manual and it said positive ground,but i figured i had best ask you fellows first, so again thanks , i,ll switch it over tomorrow and polarize the genny and see how she runs.Thanks again.

Polarity only matters for four things. The coil polarity needs to match the battery polarity for the best ignition. The generator polarity has to match the battery polarity for there to be proper charging. The ammeter polarity has to match the battery for the correct charge/discharge indications. Then there's the "correct police." In my operation the CP don't count, just the first three.

I am perhaps wrong but I believe TEA with series # above 200000 were 12 volts;
Positive or negative ground system have equivalent performances; they should be troubleshooted correctly

Was the tractor converted to 12V or is it original? Does it have an alternator or a generator? If it's been converted to an alternator then most likely it should have a negative ground. If it has a 12V generator and it came that way from the factory, then it should have the ground system that the manual specifies. If the ignition system is set up for positive ground and the elecrical system is set up for negative ground, you are losing close to half of the sprk energy. The reverse is also true.
So when you determine the correct electrical system polarity, make sure that the wire from the coil to the distributor points has the same sign as the ground.

All TE series tractors were positive ground, the mistake is made when they change the battery and they think it is like a more modern vehicle. You will need to re-polarise the Generator if you change it back to positive ground. If you haven't already moved the ground lead from the back of the dash panel to one of the bolts near the starter now is a good time to do it.Usually the 12v tractors gave little electrical trouble, just make sure that all the connections are clean and bright and tight and you should have no trouble...John

Your tractor was 6 volt. This is postive ground. The tractor was changed over at on time to 12 volt so it is negative ground. It is hooked up right do not switch them.
