I have a Harry Furguson TEA and the hydraulics all of a sudden started working very slowly. I checked the hydraulic fluid level and it was in somewhat frozen stste. The temperature had been very cold -20 C for a number of weeks. Now the hydraulics will not work at all even though the temperature has warmed up. Could this be the cause of my problem and will replacing the fluid solve the problem?

How thick is the oil in the Hydraulics, it should be as thick as engine oil, no more, use GL1 90W or Multi-grade 15W/30 if you get very low temperatures. Does the hydraulics lift smoothly or in a jerking motion. If you need the information to check for leaks etc. of sticking valves, email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk
and I will send it to you, with some pictures so you will know what your looking for. If the oil is discoloured then it needs changing, this needs doing when it is as hot as possible so that you will get as much out as possible and leave it draining overnight. Is there a lot of play in the big Control Spring at the back of the seat, you should just be able to turn it when you have an implement lifted, this could cause your problem too..... John

Did the fluid look like it was creamy? If so, it has a lot of water in it and it may have damaged something if it froze especially if you tried to use it under frozen conditions.
Get it warmed up, then remove the right access cover. Start the tractor, engage the pto and place the lift control in the up position and see that the control fork moves the control valve. Place it in the down position and look for it to move the control valve. UNDER NO CIRCUNSTANCES PLACE YOU HANDS IN THE HYDRAULIC COMPARTMENT WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AND THE PTO IS ENGAGED! Look up under the lift cover and see if there is significant leakage from the cylinder (significant means more than a few drops). If so, the piston rings/seal is damaged or the cylinder is scored or cracked. Using a mirror and a flashlight, try to look into the front right hand corner where the high pressure tube goes up to the lift cover to supply the cylinder. You're looking for a leak near the top of the tube. Finally, shut down the engine and then reach the bottom of the control fork and make sure that the control fork is attached to the control valve. The control valve has a T shaped cross bar that the fork attaches to. If it's not connected you'll need top spread the fork arms a bit and try to get it on. If you have a lot of water in your fluid, you might want to drain it and while it's low and draining do this latter check.
