Hi All being new to the tractor stuff I recently got a 1950 TO-20. Iv"e been plowing with it and it works alot better than the way I used to do it. Last night I notice that my old age is setting in and that Iv"e not been taking the PTO out of gear when I park it or when I start it. Have I damaged any thing? Also, Once in a while when sitting at idle I will start to see blue exhast which gose away when I start using using the tractor again what could cause this?

You have not damaged anything by leaving the PTO engaged after shutting down nor will you hurtaany thing by having it engaged when you start up. I would advise you to always start the tractor with the clutch pedal full down totake the hydraulic load amd transmission windage load off the engine and make starting easier. This is especially true when temperature are less than 40-50F.
Tjhe blue smoke you are seeing at idle is most like due to valve guide and/or stem seal wear. Remember when your engine is idling, the manifools pressue is well below ambient pressure, while the pressure under your valve cover is pretty near ambient. So oil can be forced around worn intake valve guides and/or stem seals and be sucked into the cylinder. As you open the throttle plate, like when you are working the tractor, the pressure in the intake manifold rises til at full throttle, it is near ambient. Since the resure differential is markedly reduced, less oil can be sucked into the cylinder and the smoking will be reduced or eliminated. Eventually the wear will get great enough that some oil will flow down and sit in the intake manifold and a good deal of smoke will be seen at start up . Theis ais all a result of normal wear and tear and if it gets bad enough, it'll start to foul the plugs and cause poor running. Then a valve job is in order.

rich...the only thing you might be putting extra wear on by starting it with the PTO in gear is the starter...if you start it without depressing the clutch. when you do this your making your starter turn over the engine AND the PTO and hydraulic pump. taking the PTO lever out of gear or fully depressing the clutch with PTO control lever in gear will disengage the PTO so that you're only turning the engine over. the blue smoke might mean your running a little rich or that you're getting some oil in the head. it's hard to say.
