TO 35 genny charging question

I have finally replaced my amp gauge and confirmed that the genny is not charging. I ususally have to charge it to get it to start.I see a dischage when running and increases with the lights so I'm thinking the ammeter os working. I removed the wires from the genny and cleaned them up, ran a ground wire to the genny and nothing. I took the wires off and started the tractor and placed my volt meter from gnd to F, gnd to A, F to A and I see nothing more than avount .5 volts DC. Is this a good test? Is there a better way to test the genny? I'm trying to establish if I have a genny or voltage regulator problem.

I might add I had it on the bench with the cover off and the brushes and commutator look very nice. I did spray them with contact cleaner.The bearings have very little play. I'm guessing this genny has been rebuilt at some time back. I may pull the genny and take to the tractor repir shop this week. I also considered converting it to 12 volts as I have the parts but was unable to get the 2 big flat head screws to move in the housing that hold the fields in.

I would have done more but we lost power at 3:00 pm yesterday due to ice storm and was just restored this morning. The guys that wok on power in the middle of ice storms must be some tuff guys.

Thanks guys, the genny is at the shop in the hands of someone who knows a lot more about it than me. He's also got my 12 volt fields which he is planning on installing. I have the rest of the 12 volt parts new at the house..

Somehow send me your e-mail address. I made up a generator trouble shooting chart for the Oliver collectors. It will also work for you. Do you know what the " motor" test is ? Nothing else find me on the hpoca form. J.

Isn't the motor test where you hook the genny up (disconnected from the wiring and fan belt) and supply power to it and see if it runs as a motor?

I spent some time in the archives and tried the following:
Tried to polarize by touching the A (armature) stud to the non-grounded batt terminal (-). I had a spark, but no improvement.
Tried to temp ground the genny (bypass the regulator) by placing jumper from F (field) terminal on the genny to the Grounded batt term (+). No improvement as in no charge, just discharge.

If memory serves, you did that correctly and proved that the problem is in the generator. The VR could ALSO be bad, as you have not proved it is good, but most likely it is just the generator, based on your test, which again I think you did perfectly. I would start there.

I'm no electrical expert but I would not expect to see anything by hooking the generator field to ground. That would cause no field current and thus no charge. If you hooked the generator field to the battery, you would see full field current and the generator should charge big time. If you do it, just touch the battery to the field and observe the ammeter response. An increase in ammeter reading would prove that your generator is working and the problem is in your voltage regulator.

I pulled these techniques from the archives. I looked at the wiring schematic and if I understand correctly, the field goes to the regulator and eventually to gnd and I also understood it from the archives the regulator varies the resistance to ground thus changing the output. Bypassing the reg to ground (I chose the pos term on the battery) was supposed to take the regulator out of the circuit. The Arm term eventually goes to the battery. I read that to polarize one touches the A stud to the non-gnded post on the battery. Maybe I didn't understand

Heres the posts I used, don't recall the authors but I probably should have made a note.
"Sounds like we are talking about an original 6V generator, not an alternator. Big difference. The #1 cause for poor charging on a 6V system is corrosion on the connections and grounding points. Testing your 6V, positive ground generator - With the engine running ~ half throttle, connect a jumper wire to the field (F) terminal on the generator, and to a good ground, like the ground lug on the back of the dash (make sure your ground connections are clean & shiny first). That jumper will force your generator to full output. If your amp gauge is working, it should ramp-up to ~7-9 amps. You can check voltage across the battery with a voltmeter, your voltage should increase to ~ 6.8-7 volts. If you don't get that response, your generator is not working correctly. If the generator does respond to the jumper, the voltage regulator is the likely problem, but clean the ground point on the regulator and all the connections and test again before ...."

and "I believe that just touching a wire between the A armature stud on genny, to the NON-grounded post on battery. I remember by thinking,"this tells the newly created charge to go from genny (arm.)into this post on battery to recharge battery."

In any case I have the genny off and headed for a Tractor shop tomorrow, There is local guy thats been in business for years. Hes an ex green tractor mechanic and works on everything now. Its like walking into a repair shop from the 40s or 50s which it is, complete with the mechanic.No computers, everything on paper. It will be a big loss when hes gone. I'm taking my new 12 volt fields with me so I can ask if he will install and test.
