Slow lift on TO-35

I need help with a slow three point lift. I rebuilt the pump and cleaned the housing good last year when I replaced the bearings in the PTO. The lift is strong, but when I pull the position lever up there is a long delay before the arms start moving up. Once they start, it is normal, but the delay is very aggravating. Is there an adjustment for this. I have checked the oil level and I am using 90 wt. GL-1 per the manual.

Thanks,

Daniel

If you are in a cold climate you could change the oil to Multi-grade 15W/30. This oil will not get as thick as the GL1 90W when it gets really cold but will still provide lubrication when hot. Another thing that can cause your problem is, if your Pump has a filter fitted, then change it or clean it, if it has no filter then it is possible that the Control Valve Bush suction holes are restricted in some way and need cleaning out, the Pump would have to come out to check this. If there is wear in the Control Valve linkage it may not be moving the Control Valve fully to lift position. If you remove the Right side round cover from the centre axle housing below the seat, with the engine running, move the Position Control Lever (the round knob) towards up and see if it moves the Control Valve lever (that goes down into the oil) fully towards the lift position or if there is any play between the end of this lever and the Control hanging down from the top, if there is play you can adjust it out with the lock-nut on the long threaded screw that the lever pivots on, just take out any play. If you need more information on this, just email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk
and tell me what you need to know. If when you had the top cover off last time if you didn't set-up the Control Linkage then you need to do it as there must be wear in there by now, I can send you the manual for this and the operating instructions for the hydraulics too....John

Usually the manuals recommend 80W GL-1 for winter use and 90W in summer. As phil said, temperature makes a big difference so if it's below 40F I'd expect slow response until use raises the oil temperture and reduces the viscosity. My TO-30 is very slow on cold start up and after 15 minutes of use the response improves noticeably.

Where are you, and how cold is it? Cold weather makes a HUGE difference.

I am in North Carolina. Temperature was in the 50's yesterday when I was using the tractor. This in a 1955 tractor so there is no filter. I will check the adjustment, but all I have to go by is an I&T manual, is there a better reference on the hydraulics?

Let me add, once the lift begins to come up, the speed is OK, its the delay between pulling the position lever up and the lift starting to move that is the problem.
