the following link has a lot of information about converting to 12 volts. There are several links inside this link follow and read all of them. I think you will wind up with a better conversion if you wire all the of the connections on the alternator. The hardest part of the conversion is making the mounting bracket.
I have pictures of what I did and if you want them drop me an email

Does it matter which direction the alternator rotates? I'm putting an alt on my TO-20, but the way it mounts will make it turn in the opposite direction for which it appears to be designed. That is, the cooling fins go the wrong way.

Maybe the fins are going the right direction.

The old generator fan pushed air over the generator, while the alternator fan sucks air from the back.

Alternators use alternating current - the little electric bugs change direction zillions of times in the blink of an eye (think positive-negative-positive-negative etc.) You can spin it either direction and it will charge the same. The only problem could be the cooling fan, but if you"re not pulling a full electric load all the time, it won"t get hot anyway.

The difference between a TO30 and 30 is the letters " TO ". I meant that as a joke.
The official name was TO 30--we lazy folk just call them a 30. The 30 is a model number--the TO was a designation as "Tractor Overseas" which meant that these were the 30's manufactured in America.
You'll lover her..... ..... we all do. Mark

All I did was put a GM altenator on, one wire, has a built in regulator, it bolted to existing bracket and all I did was pull the pulley off of the generator and put it on the altenator and I was done.
