Hey all! I searched the archives and found nothing about the crankshaft gear and the cam shaft gear....the fergie manual states they are available in standard, under or over. Supposedly they are stamped "s", "u", or "o", with a number to show the amount over or under. Most parts catalogues make no reference to the standard, over or under. My concern is that I bought a used cam shaft and gear on ebay and am hoping it "meshes" with the crankshaft timing gear I have. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike McMurray

Hi Mike.. No takers yet…. I’ll give a stab…. The point of having the o,s,u was to have assembly options because they could not locate the distance between the crankshaft and camshaft as accurately as they needed, to keep the backlash of the gears to their specification… First of all, keep in mind that we are dealing with 50 year old iron. I doubt that there is anything (other than new) that would be considered “o” or over. It all is under and has 50 years of wear and is “loose as a goose”…. Now the good news is that too tight is much worse than too loose. Too tight would put a strain on the gears and bearings, and too loose… gets a little noisy and messes a little with the valve timing, but in a nut shell no big deal.. try your gears… I seriously doubt that they will be too tight (there is a backlash spec.) and if they are too loose…. well. .. live with it, cause you can’t do anything about it without new gears and/or moving the cam (or crankshaft) Jim…
