I broke the part that turns the shaft that controls the hydraulic lift arms. You know the pot metal part the control handle bolts to. I took the broken part off and due to some procrastination it was awhile till I got the replacement. I ran the tractor some while the part was off, now after I put the new part on the hydraulics dont work. I feels like something isn't hooked up inside. How should I proceed from here?

Lets make sure that you haven't forgotten some of the easy things. From your description, nothing should have disconnected as a result of what you did.
Do you have the pump connected via the lever on the left side under the seat? ( Is the pto shaft turning?)Do you have plenty of fluid, and the correct viscosity(90 W (summer) or 80W (winter) GL-1) in the hydraulic reservoir? As pojo asked, is the shaft key in place? If the answer is yes to all three of these, then you'll have to pull the access cover off the right hand side and make sure that the linkages are all in place. This is too lengthy a proceess to describe here and I'm pressed for time this morning. Holler for John (UK) and he may be able to send you something via email to help you with checking the linkages.
When you open up the access cover, run the engine, connect the PTO and put the lift control lever in the full up position. Look up toward the top cover with a flashlight and make sure that you don't have a lift cylinder leaking due to bad rings/seals or a cracked cylinder. Also look for a leak in the upper right hand corner of the chamber where the cylinder supply tube goes into the top cover. (DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE HYDRAULIC RESERVOIR WITH THE PTO ENGAGED!) Move the lift lever up and down and see if the linkage that runs to the control valve at the base of the pump is moving. If it isn't you'll have to find out why.(Some times the linkage slips off the control valve.) Look near the base of the pump for the relief valve and if there is a lot of turbulence and noise, it may be stuck open.

That's all I can think of for the moment.Hope this helps you.

Where did you find the replacement part. I repaired mine with a homemade back plate and JB weld. Don't take offense to this question, but did you install the halfmoon key in the shaft?

I got the part at a tractor salvage yard but it is a new part made from cast iron. I'm not sure where he got it but he had it on the shelf for $18.00. Now back to the tractor i'm sure the key is in so it's not that but from reading all the responses i have an idea but i gotta ask a stupid question. Does the PTO have to be engaged for the lift to work? I'm thinking I may have turned it off since the PTO shaft is broke and i didn't think it should be running but if it's required to work the lift that would explain why the broken shaft was running in the first place.

Yes, the PTO must be engaged for hydraulics to work. Where is the PTO shaft broken?

The shaft is broke off where it comes out the back. I tried last night to engage the PTO but it wont move . The lever on the left side wont move. Any ideas to get it to engage?

pojo...i know this is mean but i actually hope he did forget it! first of all it means and easy cure, but most of all because it sounds like something i would do and then go nuts trying to figure out what i did wrong. i guess i'm hoping i'm not the only one.
