At lunch I talked to a Chemistry Professor I know about the whole Hexavelent Chromium Oxide issue in Electrolysis.Bottom Line is there is no concern. He said, it is possible to produce Hex-Chromium with the voltages and currents used during electrolysis. However, very little would be produced and what is produced will quickly be reduced in the iron rich environment away from the hex-chromium. On the other hand he stated that Washing soda is defiantly preferred to NaCl. As the chlorine in, Sodium Chloride (table salt) will react with the oxygen to form Chlorine Gas. As the amount of Chlorine is reduced the ability to transmit the current is reduced. The Carbonate in washing soda will not react and will not be used up. He also stated that the addition of lye would promote the whole process, however, the hydroxide would be used up and would need to be replenished. Thus, I will start using washing soda, and will not be concerned about using a stainless steel anode. Jeff
