Is it safe to hold up my TO30 by the front edge of the tranny? I want to pull the axle bracket off the engine and I don"t want to crack the mating flanges. The reason I ask is my parts tractor was cracked in this area over the top and half way down each side. the crack was repaired with 1/4"x 11/2" stainless strap welded and smoothed over with bondo.I don"t know what would have caused this major break but I don"t want it happening to my project. I don"t want to put a 2"x8" across the oil pan with jack stands either. That reminds me, should the oil pan have a concave shape on the bottom or is mine caved in a little?

Manual says "support the engine" when pulling the axle. I think I also supported mine under the bell housing when I pulled the axle. I once saw a picture of a TO supported with an engine hoist with the axle removed. The oil pan is pretty strong, but not suder-duper heavy, I think it is stamped steel, I'd recommend not using the pan to support the engine if possible. I don't know about the TO30 oil pan, the TO20 pan is definitely not concave, but it also has an oil filter in it that the TO30 don't. I can't imagine how your TO tranny case was cracked like that but can only assume it was a catostophic event, like flipping over or dropping into a ditch, and not casual jacking it up to change a tire sort of thing. The tranny case is quite stout!

Yes... but i'd distribute the load with a block. I did it at the bell housing. I've no idea how yours would have been broken, maybe from a sudden jolt.... Keep in mind that the tractor is strong enough to support the whole front off the ground when pulling (not that you should)... and that is cantilevering the whole including the front axle, beam and wheels....
