After finally completing things and coating my gas tank the TE20 ran really good last night. I got the mixtures figured out and it would idle and rev up beautifully. So i left it to idle while i ate dinner. And when i came back out it was stalled and would not restart even with ether. It has spark but only gives a pop/kick when the right amount of fluid is shot into it. I'm wondering if maybe theres too much fuel.

I installed a new manifold (which the bolts are all good and tight even after running), a rebuilt carb with the float set correctly, new points and ignition, installed a sediment bowl and coated the gas tank.

Im wondering what else to do now? I have to hold my hand over the intake/choke it at some points to make it suck in enough fuel. Which would make me think i had a vacuum leak.. but all the manifold bolts are good.. the hole in the manifold is plugged tightly.

Maybe one last bit of trash caused it to stop while you were gone. Then the key was on, which might have damaged the points over time, before you returned. As Jerry said, you sure you got a good spark now? When I was a programmer, the hardest problems were the ones where there were two problems, one masking the other.

Don't get mad, but are you sure the shut-off valve is open? They will run a while with fuel shut-off. When I was 10, I took the ol' 35 across about 30 acres to a pond fishing.
Fished till dark and got in a hurry and started home--yup, she died just a little way back home-now its REALLY dark. I ran all the way home-dad drove me out to take a look--AND reached up and turned the gas ON..... -luckily Dad laughed "that time"

I have changed fuel filters 3,4 or more times after "cleaning " a fuel tank. Also check whole fuel line flow-like in fuel line filter an,etc. Does fuel flow out carb drain plug? I am predicting that it is not.

Start bu making sure that you have a fat bluish white spark. Pull the center wire from the distributor cap, hold it near a good ground and try a start. You should havea a big bluishwhite spark. Not a spindly orange, yellow or blue, bluish white and fat. If you have that, then suspect the fuel system.
Open the plug at the bottom of the carb with the fuel valve open and holding a container under the carb. The gas should CONTINUOUSLY gush out like a cow peein' on a flat rock. If it doesn't, check the "secret filter" in the fuel elbow at the carb, the fuel delivery tube and the sediment bowl filter. Rap the side of the carb with a 2x4 to see if the float is hung up. Make sure the vent in the fuel cap is open.

Any chance some of the tank coating wasn't dried completely? You might have gotten some of the goop into your fuel system. Can you disconnect the fuel line from the carb and check the gas flow? There is also a very fine screen on the elbow fitting in the carb. It may be clogged.

Im gonna try the fuel flow next. The bowl looks clear with no sediment in it. I never know how far out to open the valve since its just a knob. So i just crank it open 4 turns or so. Either way the bowl would probably by empty of fuel if it just ran itself out.

I never did look at the "secret filter".. i used thread sealer to stop the fuel leaks on some of the fittings so i'll have to take them off and check it out.

I thought it was strange that it wouldnt start easily with ether though.. and it needed alot of cranking suction with my hand on it to cough a little which makes me think theres a vacuum leak somewhere but im positive that manifold is tight. I even tightened it down with the gas tank off so i could reach every bolt easily.

slideways....sorry, i think i might have given you the wrong info. i was thinking about my TO-35 when i told you about the "reserve". according to my TO-20 book, you open the valve all the way open to be set on reserve, and then screw it back in two full turns to get that "back to the barn" last gallon. i dont know if the TE is the same as a TO, but i suspect it is....unless you changed the shut-off valve out to a different type. keep trying. if it ran good once it will again. i'm sure one of the guys on this forum will hit on the right solution if you don't first. sorry again.

did you try starting it with the gas valve all the way open? i don't know if you're aware of this or not but, opening it only 4 turns leaves it in "reserve". you run this way til you run out of gas, then open it up the rest of the way and you have about a gallon left to "get you back to the barn." just trying to figure out what your problem is. hope you find it soon.
