i appreciate all those that tried to help, but i'm even more confused now. i drained every drop of old oil i could get out of my gearbox. i even tipped the whole tractor in every direction to get every drop of the old sludge out and pulled the cover plates and swabbed the inside of the gearbox. but there's no way it's gonna hold 8 U.S. gals. of oil without just about spilling out the dipstick hole. i've run the tractor, used all the hydraulics, ran the PTO, checked to see if i had jugs of "U.S." GALS., and checked to see if the dipstick marked full at about the bottom hole of the cover plate as RandyR. suggested, and still there's no room for more than about 6-1/2 U.S. gals. in my gearbox. i'm sure i have a '55 TO-35, SN'142441...what am i doing wrong here?

Mike,
I changed the rear-end fluid in my '55 TO-35 (SN 147350) about a year ago. Did the same as you...drained both plugs, wiped out what I could. I bought two 5 (US) gallon pails of fluid, thinking I needed 8 per the manual. I used all of one and only a little of the second...so about 6 or 6.5 gallons sounds about right to me.

It runs in my mind there is a bit of a low spot back by the PTO area that I couldn't really get to. Maybe that area holds that last gallon or two? Not sure though, to be honest.

justin...see my newer posting-"gearbox oil level problem solved". if you indeed have a to-35...believe these other guys that know...it should take 8 (U.S.) gals. the best suggestion i got was to pull the lower bolt on your cover plate (the one with the dipstick in it) if oil runs out there, you have it full and it should SHOW full on your dipstick. if not something else is wrong like....you have the wrong dipstick (like i eventually figured out was my problem) all the other responses i got convinced me that something was wrong. everyone insisted that my gearbox should hold 8 gals. it prompted me to keep digging til i figured it out, which i'm very thankful for as i'm sure running your tractor on too little oil in the gearbox could damage your hydraulics and tranny. i once again sincerely thank everyone that responded to my problem and helped me "get it right" and save me lots of other headaches (and heartaches...i love my 35) down the road.

6.5 US Gallons sounds right. My MF-65 manual calls for 27 us quarts. And it is bigger than the TO-35. I do not have my TO-35 book here. The correct level is such that the oil just above the bottom bolt hole on the inspection port cover.

I never heard of a tractor taking 8 gallons... The TO-20/30 is around 6 gallons. The F-40, MH-50 and MF-65 are 6.5 gallons. If a books says 8 gallons then it must be a typo.

Just to clairify. My Reprint MF-65 manual from MF/Agco states 27 quart capacity.

The vintage version states 8 gallons.

a vintage I&T clames 8 gallons.

Jeff

Well, after all the discussion I think you have got the right approach at this point. The only thing I can think of that might cause this problem is if you have some sort of congealed glop in your reservoir that won't drain and doesn't move around, etc., and it is taking up volume.

I have never heard of this problem before, have you drained the oil from the TWO drain plugs. The service manual gives the capacity as 6.6 imp gallons / 30.28 litres / 32 US quarts. You say you have a jug that was a US gallon, seems odd that it should hold 6.5 of those....are you certain that the jug is a US measurement and not an imperial measurement, that would account for your dilemma. However if all else fails, just fill it up to the mark on the dipstick, that is what it is for.

yep...it's got a six gear tranny, two stage clutch, and i drained out of both drain plugs and, like i said, actually tipped the whole tractor with jacks to get as much oil out as i could. i also let it drain over night. now it's been sitting level on my shop floor for three days. after putting in over 7-1/2 gallons, (three, two and a half gal. jugs plus), and letting it level out, i ended up draining a full gallon to get it to read right on my dipstik. i guess i'll use it and keep a close eye on the dipstick...if that's all it will take then..

i had wondered if i had the wrong dipstick, but if that tip i got about the right level being about at the bottom hole of the cover plate is correct, then my dipstick must be about right too. thanks for replying tho.

Aside from the serial number, do you have a two speed tranny with high-low and total of six forward gears? If so, then indeed likely it is a 35. (Just checking.) Did you drain all the drain holes, not just the one under the gearbox (tranny)? If so, put in five gallons and let it sit for a few hours and then check it. Then add one gallon at a time, letting it sit between the times you add oil.
