What to look for on a Fergie 30

I am going to look at a Fergusson 30 this weekend . I have a Ford 2N and am pretty familiar with what to look out for when buying one of them .

Is there anything special to look out for on a Fergusson ? Any particular trouble spots ?

I have been told by a mechanic that these motors are likely to have internal block cracks . He recomends draining the oil and looking for signs of water .

Anything to that ?

Any advice you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated !

I forgot to mention in my first post that even if the block has a small crack, it may be repairable. These can be pinned. If you take the engine down anyway (for overhaul) the pinning might be $150 - 200 extra.

Thanks for the info !

The tractor belongs to a co-worker's Mother in Law .Her husband died a few months ago and the tractor had not been run since before he died .

The thing is just going to sit idle and go to pot .I hate to see that happen to any tractor .They really just want to give it a good home .

I will give it a good going over on Saturday . Hopefully , everything will be in reasonably good shape and I will bring it home .

I need another tractor to use while I rebuild my Ford sometime down the line .

The TO30, with it's overhead valves, is a great pulling tractor and easy to work on. It will outpull any 8N and the ones I have had will pull a plow at least as well as my NAA. I like the brake arrangement better on the Fords, but other than that, and not having PTO independent of the lift, I can't think of any major negatives regarding operations of the TO30s. Definitely someone should rescue that tractor. Too many are being parted out.

Your mechanic is correct. You don't need to drain much oil as of course the water will be on the bottom. Also, check that the hydraulic lift comes all the way up. There is an adjustment, but the cam gets worn and often you can't adjust further. Also, sometimes water gets down steering rod and ruins bearings and maybe gets in box and freezes and it cracks. Steering box is hard to find and expensive. Bearings are available, however. Starter switch operates off gear shift. Sometimes stock switch arrangement doesn't work, but it is usually not hard to repair. Hope that helps
