The correct firing order is 1-3-4-2 with the #1 cylinder right behind the radiator. Pull the #1 plug and crank the engine while holding your thumb over the # 1 spark plug hole.(you'll need someone to tap the starter to do this). When you feel the pressure build up, you are on the compression stroke for the #1 cylinder. Look at the hole under the starter and tap the starter til you see the degree markings. Line up the 7oBTDC degree mark with the slot in the hole. Open up the distributor and look at where the rotor is pointing. That's where your #1 plug wire should come off the cap. Since the distributor turns counterclockwise, the #3 wire comes of at the next position counter clockwise from the #1 plug. likewise with the #4 and the #2. While you have it at this position, you may as well statically time it. Put a paper clip or a bent piece of wire in the # 1 spark plug boot and hold it near a good ground. Turn on the ignition key, loosen the distributor and rotate it first one way a few degrees and then the other until you hear the spark pop. At that point you are statically timed. You may have to do it several times before you get it right but when you feel you have it, tighten down the ditributor and it should get you started so you can check it with a timing light.
