TO-30 6V Wiring Question

I thought I knew what I was doing until I started looking back through some posts about this. I have a TO-30 that still has the 6V system. It is wired up with a negative ground. From what I'm reading, this does not seem normal. What am I missing here?

Also, I've seen posts that reference "reversing the polarity" of the generator. (although I'm not sure I know enough not to fry something) Is there a way to determine the polarity of the generator now?

Doug, the same thing happened to me several years ago when I bought a TO-30. Someone had hooked up the battery so that it was (-) grounded. Batteries can reverse their polarity and that is what happened. I simply put in a new battery, hooked it up with a (+) ground, and it has worked fine ever since.

This battery has kept it's normal polarity. (I've checked it with a volt meter, charged it, and it all still works.) I've also confirmed that the coil was hooked up with the negative side to the distibutor, and positive to the ignition, etc. It also seems to be charging properly... ??

The TO-30 is a positive ground system. When you turn on your headlights, without starting the tractor, your ampmeter is probably going to the right..showing a charging condition,(assuming your meter polarity wasn't switched) because your battery is connected incorrectly.In this condition the battery is really discharging. If indeed your generator is putting out voltage and is charging your battery, as you start the tractor & rev it up, the ammeter should come back to center and then go to the left of zero. If all this worked, your tractor will function fine, the only problem is your ampmeter is backwards, and your generator is coming up the opposite polarity. If you want to straighten out this problem, turn the battery around (positive to chassis and negative to the starter solenoid). After doing this, turn on your headlights as before without starting the tractor and the meter should be on the left (showing discharge) After you start the tractor & rev it up, the meter should come through zero and be on the right. If the meter won't go to the right, the generator may need re-polarized. Hope this helps.
