TO-30 cracked block

I removed the head from my Z129 because of coolant in the oil and found cracks between three of four cylinders. There was evidence of head gasket failure and the head needed to be resurfaced. My question is, when an engine block is refurbished by furnace brazing and re-machining, would the original cracks still show or would they disappear from the process? I ask this because the block looks recent (no paint, light rust, etc.) compared to the head and the rest of the tractor. I"m wondering if a previous owner hung an exchange block on it but didn"t do the right thing and go through the head too. Should I button it up with the repaired head and new gaskets and see what happens, or are those cracks I see absolutely unrepaired?

Many thanks to all who responded. You confirmed what I"d pretty much suspected. So, on to the next step--a cure! Thanks again!

I had a TO-20 block that was cracked both top and bottom, but not through the main bearings. A friend's father who used to have a Ferguson dealership in Southern Indiana had it repaired for me at a local machine shop there. The block was drilled through from the side opposite the cam between the cylinders and into the lifter rail on the opposite side. The lifter rail holes were drilled and tapped for a 3/8-16 bolt. The bolts were turned down in the middle for clearance with the sleeves. The bolt heads were sealed at the block with copper washers and silicone sealer. After reassembly, I used a good quality block sealer as instructed. The engine has been in moderate service (mowing) for over 10 years now without a problem.

The cracks will never disappear but they will be filled by the braze material and will have a yellowish color like polished brass. I have a furnace brazed block in my TO-30 and that's how it looks. When they finsih the brazing, the time in the furnace stress relieves the block and it has to be remachined.

Since you have evidence of water in the pan it's probably because the block is cracked not only at the top but at the bottom as well.If you button it back up with out checking for cracks on the bottom side I'm afraid that you might be disapointed that you went to the work on the top side and then have to do it all over again. You should be able to drop the pan, fill the block with water and let it set an a dry surface over night and then see if you have any water under it.

Have seen alot of those for years. Not only it's cracked on the top it's almost guaranteed to be cracked on the bottom side too. Seen alot of them trashed. Did have one gentleman patiently ground out the cracks and filled them with jb-weld. i know he put it back together in the shop and it didn't leak when it left, but i don't know how long it lasted haven't heard. That's been24 years ago. We always ended up trashing the block. If anyone else has a good fix like to know.
