Hi all! I ordered a rebuild kit for my TO 20. Came with sleeves, pistons, wrist pins, valves, seals, and the entire gasket kit. In the gasket kit there is both a small roll of "black felt" and some white string. I am curious as to what these go to, as I was unable to locate anything like this when I dismantled the engine. I think I can account for all the other gaskets, etc. Thanks Mike McMurray

Mike, the white string is packing for the rear main bearing cap. Take a look at that, it is actually bolted to the back of the block where the crank goes thru into the clutch housing. The packing is stuffed down the machined packing gland/hole on each side, between the block & bearing cap. The packing prevents oil from seeping past the cap into the clutch housing. I found a thin screwdriver with the tip ground down flat worked just fine for packing the string down into the packing gland. Some guys use some gasketmaker at the end to help seal the packing flush with the bottom of the block so the oil pan seals nicely. That's up to you, it isn't essential.

My guess is the felt may be for the front crankshaft dust seal in the timing gear cover. I did not install a dust seal on the front, just the front oil seal, and don't recall getting any felt in my rebuild kit, so I'm not 100% certain on that.

You may not use every single gasket, depends on the extent of your overhaul. Assuming you have a Ferguson re-print manual, as long as you follow your manual closely, you won't miss anything. The manual is very comprehensive. The felt dust seal and packing are both covered in the manual.

George

My overhaul kit did not have the string for the rear main bearing and no felt seal for the crank pulley. The kit did have the crankshaft seals.

But, I also got a couple felt washers, one over 1" and the other about 1 1/2" diameter. I also got a 1" think by just over 1" diameter felt washer. In addition, there was a 6" diameter rubber O-ring with square cross-section of about 1/4". None of these can I find in the assembly/parts manual.

I was surprised the kit contained rubber seals for the intake valves, copper washers for the valve cover hold-down bolts. There were 2 more copper washers that I used for the 2 small bolts that go thru the rear bearing cap to secure the rear seal. This needed to be oil tight thru the 1/4" bolts/nuts.

This is about it for the mysteries of my engine gasket kit. Would appreciate any answers to my extra stuff.

Hi Jerry, yes all is well. I had recieved a couple "flamemails" a while back and needed some time to re-consider the value of my time spent on these boards. But I have recieved many "thankyoumails" over the years too... so, heck with the occasional critic, I like talking about Fergys!
