Hi all,
I just bought a TE20. Was a non-runner, but went through it all and got it running today :)

I have a load of questions that I hoping you may be able to help with.....please!?!

1. I have white oil in my rear transmision tunnel. I am guessing I have water in from the gear selecters - could this be right? Is there a good cure?

2. Is there anywhere I can download a manual for it?

3. What oil should be in the various places? (air filter, gear box and engine)

4. How much oil should be in the gearbox - is there an overflow type hole?

emm, I think that's it for now - although I am sure there is more!

Thank you for your help. Apart from the above she's a beauty! Everything has gone very well today, things have been very simple to strip and fix. Very pleased with the old lady!

Welcome to the Ferguson world.

Attached is the procedure I used to change the oil in the transmission. This version is written for the MF-65 thus the quanities will be a little different.

Hi John,

Have you any hot tips for UK part suppliers? I have looked about and prices seem quite inconsistant - what is cheap in one place is expensive elsewhere. Any clues?

I've got a stuck break, but that's just going to be a case of stripping and seeing.

Looking forward to getting this thing runniong right! :o) I'm all out of time this year so it will be a case of getting it going right for now, but I will do a full restoration next year. Probably end up with engine re-builds etc next year - knowing me!

Another question. Is it easy to fit a water temp gauge? I don't have one and I fee a bit like I am driving in the dark not knowing what the engine is up to and how it is doing.

It has an oil pressure gauge that is stuck. I assume it is a case of buying the whole unit again?

Are the old tractors happy living outside? It strikes me with those gearstick gaitors that they weren't meant to! It worries me that if I buy an oil pressure gauge and water temp gauge they will pack-it-in when left outside?

You might want to search the archives on this,too.
Jeff(OH) has some good tips on cleaning out the trans. I did mine and after cleaning, I jacked the back of the tractor about as high as I could get it with a floor jack and there was quite a bit of gunky oil that came of the back drain hole. That oil sets in the lowest part of the differential case and is lower that the drain hole when the tractor is on the level.

I can give you the information you need for the Brakes and the Carburettor and Ignition tuning, and anything else you need,just tell me what the engine is, is it a Continental or a Standard Motors. You can use unleaded petrol in your engine without any trouble. Fitting a Temperature gauge will depend on what the engine is, if you let me know that I can tell you but the answer usually is yes you can. The Oil Pressure gauge will require replacing if it is stuck, you can"t do anything with them at all. The gauges are sealed and shouldn"t be too worried about living outside. The water going through the gear lever can be helped by fitting a Rubber Boot to the lever, you can get one from a Sparex dealer, part number S40821 or S40822, there is another place that water will get in and that is through the Draft Control Spring at the back of the drivers seat, to stop it you need to pull it apart and replace the Felt washer as it will have gone hard and will be worn. Do you not have a Tarpaulin sheet that you could put over the tractor, that would keep most of the weather off it. Parts dealers you ask about, as you say the prices do vary a lot from one dealer to another, you just have to shop around, you can do this on-line so it isn"t too difficult, I can give you some names of parts suppliers when you write, just remind me again when you do.

Thank you guys, very much appreciated. I will print and follow those instrustions.

Another two questions...sorry it's all new to me!
1. Do have to use LRP? Can you get away with unleaded?
2. The other question was about tuning, but I think I've managed to find that using the 'search facility'

I have the dip-stick, although the dipstick for the engine is missing :(

The "white" oil is water in the transmission, it will enter through the bottom of the gear shift lever (fit a rubber boot)and through the inner end of the Control Spring behind the seat. Drain the oil through 3 drain plugs under the transmission, the hydraulics and the rear axle, drain when warm, fill with 5 imp galls or 6 US galls GL1 90W (not GL5) or 15w/30 Multi-grade, the 15W/30 is better if you are in a cold climate as it will not go as thick as GL1.There should be a dipstick on the r/h side round cover just below the seat,if there is no dipstick what is blocking the hole up as water will get in, to check the level with no dipstick, remove the bottom setscrew that holds the round side cover in place, the oil should just run out, but from empty it takes exactly 6 US galls or 5 IMP galls. The engine takes SAE30 and so does the air cleaner. I have the instruction book for download if you need it, no manual. fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk

First I would order a service manual useing this site, look to your left. Then I would drain the transmission oil, the service manual will help you cuz I am not familar with the 2o on how many drain holes there are. Fill with GL1 Hydraulic oil. Drain the engine oil as per your manual and fill. The air filter will use the same weight oil as you use in the engine. Now after running and if you keep garage you will be able to tell if the water in the transmission is from the engine or outside (rain or being stored outside). Others with the 20 will have more to say on this but hope it helps.
