PTO lever disengaging.

I was bush hogging over the holiday and I ran into this problem. My PTO lever would disengage and pop back into neutral. I think it happened when the mower would raise because of ground unevenness. I went along holding the PTO lever in place and could feel every so often something pushing the lever/inner gear forward.

Any ideas?

This is on a MF-65 (similar quadramatic system as the TO-35)

Has it popped the circlip off the PTO shaft, the one that holds the bearing in place and is allowing the shaft to move in and out as the mower rises and falls. Due to the quite high horsepower that can be transmitted from the tractor, the PTO shaft on the mower can lock-up instead of telescoping, make sure that the mower PTO shaft moves in and out freely and give it some lubrication. You will probably have to withdraw the PTO shaft from the tractor to check it and repair it. It could also be the gear lever lock plunger that is worn and not able to hold the lever in position any longer but everything is on the round plate that carries the lever, so if you remove that you will be able to see if the plunger or the plate is worn without too much trouble.
