I purchase a TO20 2yrs. ago. I changed gear oil, (not knowing much about tractors) I put GL5 gear oil in it. After being on this site I realize I put the wrong oil in it. I went to Napa and purchase GL1 gear oil, I drained the old oil so I want to do it the correct wrong so Should I clean the inside or what? Any opinions on your behalf are greatly appreciated.

Thank You
Mel

As Dean says, cleaning is always a good thing to do, but I think it is unlikely there will be enough GL-5 left inside to do any damage once you dilute the little bit left with six gallons, or close to it, of the GL-1. I say 'close to it' because it is indeed pretty much impossible to get all the old oil out. Drain all three holes and let the last one drain over night. When you fill it, just put in 5 gallons or so and let that sit awhile until you are sure about the level, as it often takes several hours to level out.

Mel:

There is probably no reason to clean the sump just because of the use of GL5 but your sump probably needs cleaned anyway.

It's a messy job but it can be done externally through the left and right inspection covers using a garden sprayer and solvent. I use gasoline because it is more agressive than kerosene or diesel fuel. Of course you must practice common sense due to the flammability.

It helps to remove as much muck as possible using your hands prior to spraying with the sprayer.
