Sherman Overdrive in Fergie

Have Sherman Overdrive unit. Will this unit fit in TO 30? Have tractor split looks like tractor housing will have to modified, also the shifter will be just rear of the clutch shaft opening. Any help would be appreciated.

Don..... ...whattza matter, you didn't like yer answer on the Ford Board? (now pg-3) Shermans built for 8N's will NOT FIT Fergies.

NO, unfortunately. Sumptin' gitts in the way inside the Fergy tranny housing. So the top of the Fergie Sherman shifter cover is made different than 8N shifter covers. Look at the PICTURES. Different eh? Isn't that amazing?

Interestingly, the Sherman designed for the Fergy, (TO-20 & TO-30) will fit the 8N. Just NOT the other way around..... ..Dell, the NON-authority

Dell.. a couple things... 1) what you show is the Hi/Lo combo (pictures from J. Smith's Ford Site), not the overdrive unit refered to by Don. The overdrive unit came in two flavors: cable shift and the typical shaft shifter. Below is both the lever and the cable shift versions:

and I am not so sure that the overdrive unit has the same problems as the combo...
2) Also, concerning the combo unit that you discuss, it is not sufficient to just change the top covers to make a Ford unit fit a Ferguson. Some machining must be done to the case: See the pic below (also a Smith picture)

Also, it is my understanding (and I am not 100% sure about this), that the interference problem is with the gear-shift start feature of the Ferguson and if one is willing to give up this feature, a Ford unit can be adapted to the Ferguson.

Jim..... ..take 'nutter' lookie-look at yer OD lever shifter. The TOP cover slider-rod is FORE-AFT and the illustrated Fergie top cover distinctly shows the need for space for the Fergie tranny housing cross shaft BEHIND the Fergie top cover. Your illustrated OD shifter BLOCKS that required space. And iff'n ya still gitt confused, look at the Sherman INPUT SHAFT for orientation. The shown Fergie Sherman top cover has the shifter rod going side-wize. And even the cable operated tranny shifter top cover don't provide that NEEDED Fergie tranny cross-shaft space.

BOTTOM LINE, 8N Shermans of enny type are NOT COMPATIBLE with Fergie tranny housings..... ...respectfully, Dell the NON-authority

Only if it came OUT of a Fergie. The topcover for the Ford version doesn't allow clearance for a cross-shaft. This was answered very well (with photos) by Dell on the Ford board a couple of days ago. HTH
