Y'all go ahead and laugh at this non-mechanical city boy. I bought a beautiful refurbished '52 TO30 and have been using it for bush hogging and hayrides for a couple of months. I put the battery charger on the battery (with cables on) after a couple of weeks of not using the tractor as she started slow. She fired up, I did some hayrides, then when I shut of the engine, she wouldn't start again. I turn the key and get a single "tick" sound - not multiple ticks like the starter is whirring, and there's no indication that the engine's trying to turn over.

I saw some smoke coming from what I thought to be the resitor - so I bought a new one & replaced it. That wasn't it. There's a black cylindrical part that seems to be wired between the ignition switch and the resistor - is that the Starter Solenoid? If it was bad would I get these symptoms? Any help or questions to help me describe the problem would be appreciated.

If your TO-30 has the original start switch, actuated by the shift lever it doesn't have a solenoid. If it is the original starter switch, look on top of the bell housing and you see the cable from the battery on one side of the switch and on the other side of the switch is the cable to the starter. Some times these get out of adjustment or just get crudded up and don't make the circuit. There a 4 bolts that hold the switch assembly to the bell cousing and the holes are slotted. losen them and move the switch around to see if you can adjust it.If not a new switch is about $15 + shpg.

Guys - I should have stated - this is a 12-volt conversion with a new (seems like aftermarket) starter switch. Thanks!

just so you know that if it is 6-volt it has a positive ground not negative.

You might try putting the tractor in high gear and rock it front to back by turning the rear wheel just enough for the fan to move slightly. Then return the tractor transmission to neutral and try the starter again. Sometimes a starter bendix will "Lock" in the flywheel and cause the engine not to turn even at full voltage to the starter.

The solenoid itself draws about 50 amps, and the starter a few hundred. A bad connection at the battery or the starter will drop the voltage so far the solenoid won't pull in all the way and all you get is that click. Try cleaning the battery posts. You will need a 1/2" wrench, maybe 7/16" and take the ground post off first. That way if your wrench touches the sheet metal it won't get welded fast. And put the ground post back on last.

make sure your battery is fully charged! try jumping it, if it starts then its your battery. if not then i would check the solinoid. but im a hack, someone else can probably do better than me
