Hi

I'm having trouble adjusting the tappet clearances on my petrol MF 35. When the first cylinder is at TDC which valves should I be adjusting? Also is the first cylinder closest or furtherest away from the driver.

Thanks.

Scott

Both Chuck and Talf are right. Front of tractor is #1. Seeing that it is more difficult to find TDC of any cylinder, Talfs method is the easiest. It is the same method we would use on race engines that had very long duration cams. In that case setting by TDC would not work. All inline 4,6, and 8 cyl. engines that I am aware of can safely be adjusted using the "9" method

I have an article about setting the tappets on a t20. I dont know if its the smae for a 35, but ill tell you anyway.
All you have to do is remember the number 9. If valve 1 is open then you adjust tappet 8.(1+8=9)
if tappet 2 is open you adjut tappet 7 etc etc. If anyone thinks I have this wrong then please tell me. This ensures that the tappet you are concidering is completely closed.

Hi Scott,
You want to adjust the valves on the cylinder that's at TDC. That's because when it's at TDC, the valves are both closed and there's no tension on them from the push rods, therefore allowing you to do the adjustments.
# 1 is furthest from the driver (nearest to radiaor).

Good luck,
Chuck
