TO 20 seals

I have lots of oil dripping from both weep holes under the transmission/clutch housing on my 49 TO 20. I have a ferguson shop manual but don"t understand if I can replace the main drive shaft seal, pn195 760 m1, with out removing the steering assembly and the transmission cover plate. I undcerstand that I must remove the oil pan to replace the rear main seal, pn 1 750 260 M91 so I"ll have to jury rig some support for the front half of the tractor after I remove the pan and split it. The tractor not the pan! Sure would like to hear from John or somebody experienced at this. Thank"s much

If the drive shaft seal into the gearbox is leaking then you will have to split the tractor. so if the engine is out you can remove the oil pan and get at the Rear Main seal then. You cant replace the drive shaft seal through the top if you remove the steering, as you have to take off the drive shaft and that is stuck into the Clutch on the Flywheel, so you have to split it....sorry.....if you want info on how to split it email me at:-
fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk and I will send it with the info you need to reset the engine governor linkage too, as you have to disconnect this. You need to fit a couple of wedges between the front axle and the axle carrier to stop the engine from tipping over to one side when you take it out. To support the engine, if you leave the Radius Rods in position on the Axle you can support the engine on those, just put a block under each one...BUT do make it safe to work on if you are going to get underneath it. Block the wheels etc. I suppose that you have looked to see if it is different coloured oil that is leaking out of the two drains and not all the same colour, that would mean only one of the seals is leaking. Black would be the engine oil and green or yellow would be the transmission oil.

I received these guidelines Aaron.
You only need to split the tractor. Remove the four bolts securing the input shaft housing to the trans case. Wiggle the housing forward,might need to tap with a hammer. Slide the shaft forward with it.Be careful, the main shaft forward bearing ( which is the first thing you will see with the shaft removed) may slide off the main shaft and fall into the trans. May be salvaged by a magnet. Thank's to Chuck for sending this!
