Ignition timing TO 35

I have my TO 35 dlx together and running. Its experiencing an occasional pop or sputter that generally lessens as the throttle increases. I've rebuilt the carb, changed the cap and rotor, have new points and wires to install. I looked through the archives and see timing mentioned frequently for sputtering problems. I checked my dist shaft and it has probably at least 010 play in it, maybe more. I have a distributer from a TO 20 laying around that has no play in it and was considering moving over. I see in the manual it says to set timing staticly yet I see timing marks on the front of the engine. Can you check the timing with a timing light? I dont remember seeing a timing mark on the front pulley when I cleaned and painted it. I want to check the timing on the dist I have now before I start swapping parts as it should be ruled out anyway.
Thanks

Timing hole on bellhousing for timing light. When finished, make sure you have a cover or plug for the hole. I had a 35 with no cover on that hole and one winter a mouse got in there, made a nest, hatched little ones, and all the moisture seized my clutch. Had to split the tractor.

Phil, have you ever seen the plug that was supposed to go into these old Continentals? I never have but was told that there was a rubber plugthat covered the timing window.

Have seen one, but don"t know where you would get one. I plugged mine with plug for boat drain. Kinda like one of those stoppers you put in a wine bottle after you open it and can"t drink it all.

It sounds like you have a lot of wear in your distributor shaft/bushing. If you close the points and then push radially (push the side of the shaft), do the points want to open? If they do it time to rebuild it. As far as using the TO-20 distributor I believe it has a different advance curve than your TO-35 so you might lose some power at fuel efficiency at the higher rpms, but it will run until you get the correct distributor rebuilt. The alternative is to recurve the TO-20 distributor to the T0-35 specs. You migh also want to check your valve lash because than can cause some of the sputtering at the low rpm part of the spectrum. But get your distributor right before you try to adjust the valves. Make sure that you have tigh intake manifold gaskets and a tight intake manifold to carburetor gasket. You can check thi with starting fluid or car cleaner CAREFULLY SPRAYeD AROUND THESE CONNECTIONS. If you have a leak, you'll hear the rpm pick up when the fluid gets sucked into the leak momentarily enriching the mixture.You rebuilt the carb so you should have good throttle shaft seals. What I'm getting around to is make sure that you have no air leakage past the carb metering system because this can lean out the mixture at low rpms(high manifold vacuum)and cause this problem.
Make these changes systematically til the problem goes away.

After ruling out some other things maybe I can swap the TO 20 distributor which has no slop just to determine if that makes any difference. It does not look that difficult to move and I found the timing hole cover on the TO 20 block last night so I know what to look for on the 35. A quick check here and other places says that replacement distrubtors are avaiable but I have not seen any parts yet.

Do you know if the bushings are available for the distributers?

John I don't think the bushings are an over the counter part. When I had mine rebuilt, the specialty shop that rebuilt it made the bushing. They either replaced the shaft or remachined it because of the wear and then made the bushing to fit. Remember to put oil in the distributor reservoir on the TO-20 distributor. You may also have one on the TO-35 distributor. It's an often overlooked maintenance item on these distributors.

John;

The puff and sputter on the Continental engines used in the Ferguson tractors must be an inherant charicteristic of that particular engine. We had a TE-20 and a TO-30 and they always seemed to have a puff in the exhaust.

Timming. We timed the TO-30 by the book. I&T manual. It works better if you have a helper.
Good luck and have fun.
