I recently had an episode with my TO 30 that I"ve never had before. The tractor siezed up and stop while idling in neutral. Then I could could start the engine with the clutch engaged, but the engine would bog down and die if placed in any gear or neutral. I was freed by hitting the key a little in 1st gear and the machine will run perfectly for a period then you"ll go out and start the machine and have to gimmie the the shifter and coming on/off clutch till it will get it gear and function. The lever to the right side of the gear shift has also some play about 1-2 inches away from the tractor. This lever used to not have this play prior to this problem. The lever would only go up and down, hugging the tractor. PLEASE HELP

If you can start it while the clutch pedal is held down then it is something in the gearbox or maybe that other lever is a reduction or step-up box in the clutch housing and that maybe causing the problem, possibly something has broken up, like a bearing. If you keep trying to start it as you are doing now you may do some serious damage. You need to find the fault. You say the clutch was "engaged" do you mean that you had your foot off the pedal, that is engaged, from your description I think you mean that the clutch was disengaged, with your foot on the pedal and that would allow you to start it as the gearbox would not be connected, as soon as you lifted your foot off the pedal the engine stopped, this would be due to something broken or damaged in either the main gearbox or the reduction box with the small lever. It really does sound from what you say, as though it is the reduction gear or whatever it is in the Clutch housing, having that play means something is broken, but check the pin through the bottom of the lever if there is one, it could be just that. Try the lever to see if it will move into another "gear" and if it will start then. Look through the oil filler plug and see if the brass selectors are in their correct place and that one hasn't broken allowing two gears to be engaged at once. The usual one to break is the furthest one from the oil filler, towards the right side of the tractor.

Hi Gary

You can put the transmission shifter in neutral
an roll the tractor by hand if it rolls the problem is in the auxiliary transmission. I had this problem few times with my Fergusons with Hupp transmission.

Many years ago I applied too much pressure on the
Hupp lever when attempting to put it in low range
(shifter right & up) results were Hupp lockup.
I tried many different gymnastics with the shifter
no success. I splitted the tractor and found that the Hupp has 2 gears partially engaged which caused the lockup. No damage no cost just time to R&R. I placed IT in neutral position and checked it seemed OK I reassembled the tractor and no problemos for many years until my son does the same mistake as me when shifting in low range.

We learned that when we engage in low range we "must" be gentle and delicate if it refuses to engage just release the cluth slowly a bit and press it again to help gear meshing.

No problems since Fergies are more than 50 years now.

My little 2 story
