in frame vs. pull the engine rebuild

I need to rebuild the engine on a TO 20. The #1 cylinder sleeve shattered along with much of the piston (my guess is that a valve stuck open, eventually broke, and got caught inside. The rod is slightly bent (and I am in search of a new one). I have checked the comprehensive rebuild kit on this website and am wondering if it makes more sense to remove the entire engine given the amount of money I will spend on the rebuilt kit. I need some advice on what others might do. The gears on the oil pump are somewhat chewed up as well, and will probably have to get a different pump. THe crank appears to be pretty good (no scores, etc) on the con rod journals. All the sleeves have been pulled, as well as the pistons/rods. I am a little nervous about pulling the engine (lack of experience) and seem to have most of the hard work done (removal of sleeves, etc. I plan on putting new con rod bearings in as well. Am i on the right track or would you all recommend that I continue to tear down and pull the engine. I am a little nervous becasue of all that metal which was flying around inside. Might pull the main caps and get a look on those. If the conn rod journals are worn then probably the mains are as well and then its time to pull the block so as to remove the crank and have it ground. I'd mic the conn rod journals. I've had a couple of 8n motors apart and my experience was that the mains and rods wore about the same.
I'd avoid pulling the block if you can unless you want to get into everything behind it like flywheel resurfacing, clutch replacement, tranny input shaft seal, throwout bearing etc.

In this case, I think you should pull the engine. Might be easier to check things out.
