Hi everyone

This is my first post on here, having recently moved from the UK to live full time in France i had an inkling for a tractor and with the wife's full blessings obtained a 1951 TE-A 20 (non runner) the chap very nicely delivered it for me the 40 ish miles to my place and within 10 mins had it running and driving round the field, then the fun started stripping down all the parts sandblasting priming and painting etc getting it fully sorted and running better all was going very well until i found a crack in the right side of the block! after using a needle gun to remove all the paint and crud from the block a single weld about 10" long emerged from under a skimming of body filler right from the back of the block to just before the drain for the block water,it was obvious that it had been there for donkeys years but on closer inspection i found another crack going from the end of the weld right to the front of the block, searching on this forum i had the impression that welding was going to be a bit of a job so i looked around and asked a few people and came up with a repair that i completed today, it involved drilling holes and tapping them along the line of the crack leaving a small gap in between each bolt, grinding the bolts off flush with the block and then drilling again in the gap overlapping the other bolts to make a line of new steel in place of the crack. After 28 drillings and tappings i have just about filled in all the crack and so far its looking good about another 2" to go and the "weld" will be complete. I am not sure if any of you have used this method before but it sure is a lot cheaper and more "do it yourself" than getting specialists in to repair it.

Any comments or questions gratefully received Regards Mick in France

P.S. brilliant site and discussion forum i have learnt a lot here so far, keep up the good work.

I hope i have this right its the first time i have used photobucket but here are some pics of the repairs i made to the cracked block, sorry about the quality but the cam aint too good theres one pic that shows the overlapping bolt pattern which should give you the idea. the last pic of the inlet manifold is what i practiced on before drilling the engine block you can see the 3 overlapping bolts well on that pic.
Mick.

Sounds like quite a repair. Can you post a picture? Photobucket.com will host photos for free
